Almost looks the part, but the painted rear cover makes me think its seen some level of rework.

I would love too see more pics of the stock but the paint on the cover looks to me like the same type of stuff on the butt of a lot of non-refurbs, what it is I do not no, but I wouldn't rule out non-refurb quite yet.... I wish I could get my hands on it....its soooo pretty smack1

Hell..   I had an obvious refurb with that stuff on the butt.  Which one indicates what?  Chicken or the egg?

The question is did they do it during refurb or was it there before. I have no idea I just think we can't rule it out its not a typical refurb paint.

It could be that stuff they put on the buttplates, bet we dont even know if thats 'original' from tula or the part of some rework process.  Seeing I had a rework with this characteristic, I dont feel its going to make or break the verdict on this one.

Yeah I agree who knows, maybe there all light refurbs we really will never know but in the end it would be nice to know what the real truth is. I also agree it doesn't matter a bunch on this one its as close to original as I have seen so it kinda trumps us picking it apart.

very nice!!! thank you for sharing those pictures!!

little prob with the clip wants to keep showing little bit rust spots should it be re blued? or just keep fighting it with oil

Dannyboy53

That's odd, the second '49 posted has the same serial number as my Russian!

Pretty neat eh Danny?!  I'd say that's pretty conclusive proof that the Ruskies most certainly reused prefixes and numbers.  The $64,000 question is what is the frequency which this occurred and what was the pattern for prefix assignment.  thumb1

Nice gun OP.  I wouldn't cold blue anythings on that gun.  I know the magazine is already mangled with that tear inducing 5 round limit job, but there's something to be said for keeping as much of the original finish on it as possible.

This is an odd gun to me.  Stock almost seems restamped to me as does the receiver cover S/N.  BO is certainly a different height than the numbers on a majority of the S/N stampings.  What's the story behind these guns?  Were they bought as '49s, or simply randomly pulled out of crates?

I don't care if it's a '49, even in 1949, it was still a magazine.......clips load magazines,  yeah, I'm that guy ... :)

Nice rifle by the way thumb1
I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse......

Leave the gun, take the cannoli.

I said I was an addict........I didn't say I had a problem

Looks like two layers of shellac...

Another nice Canadian gun.  Not sure if they come anymore original even up there.

it's same here in the US. So far 1954 Tula is most common

bcblaster

last night same serial numbers were posted as my 49 tula. anymore theory about this is it also a 49?

running-man

Danny's gun with the same S/N is a mid year gun.  It is a refurb with a '53 Tula receiver cover. The cover could be scrubbed and replaced and the gun could easily be a 53 Izhevsk as other Izhevsks are known with the BO prefix.  The Russians reused prefixes, it's very common to see the same prefix on guns several years apart. I have yet to see identical prefixes in consecutive years, but it could be that our data set is too small to see something like that still.

The identical number thing is just one of those things that statistically has to happen once in a while just like winning the lotto. The odds of any two given rifles matching are 1/X^2 assuming there are X rifles (anywhere from 2k up to 10k) per prefix. 2k rifles per prefix gives 1/4,000,000, 10k gives 1/100,000,000. Pretty long odds!
