Nice!  clap1

I wonder if they have a special block of guns they set aside for this conversion or they just took any decent condition M59/66 and used it?

They had 300 of these.  There were 600 chinese honorguards imported and those are up to $900 after shipping and transfer.

I really like that look and wasn't sure if I really really wanted one.  Has anyone ever seen one of these in person?  I cannot find any examples of these in the US even going back many years on various boards/forums.

I did pass up the sweet 59/66 recently.... then bit on the M59 and it is a beauty.

These are unissued SKSs.  Pricey?  Yes.  Rare?  Probably.

I would never shoot one.  I would keep it safe or display it.  Is it worth $700 for a safe queen?

I wonder what these will sell for in 2016 on GB....  Fun to watch for that.

I see three guns in AIMs pics with the letter I as the year 1972.

They come with log books... Will be interesting to see if they are the original Zastava log books, refurb depo books, or something else.

For me is the glorified wall hanger status that turns me off.  I'm in the same boat as GM, they just don't excite me.  Sure they look pretty and they are rare & pristine, but there's other rare and pristine guns out there for around the same price.  I might wind up regretting, but hey, at this point I don't! :)

These are 100% functional weapons in which were made differently for a purpose.  This purpose although symbiotic, is well known and an important chaper in the Yugo sks history.  These guns have never been imported before and we may never see them again. For me, it does not matter if they are chrome, rust, painted, blued, short, or long, its about collecting a historical variation.  I also do not believe anyone is going to lose money on them.  Its pretty impressive that 300 were available to start, and in less then 24 hrs at $700 there is less then 1/3 remaining.

Post by: Loose}{Cannon on September 19, 2015, 11:06:48 AM
I'll also add that Slovenia is roughly the size of New Jersey having just 7,300 active duty military personnel.  Im guessing the guard unit using these guns is very very small.  Seeing that these rifles are still in use, I'm very surprised they let any of them go at all yet alone aprox 300.

These are 100% fictional weapons in which were made differently for a purpose.

Correct, but it's a "fictional weapon", one may flip one in the future for a Trump sum price, I just can not get excited over one, while it is a excellent display of Communism, all it did in life was twirl, flip, spin and click on the ground. I see a glorified gymnastic rifle, it didn't earn the hard life, blood and guts markings, carried by a lonesome soldier scared to death, half froze and soaked, like so many other weapons did, it lived in a locker safe from harm, rage and carnage. It was simply pulled out for special occasions and to perform for V.I.Ps and what not. Also, I guess I look around the speculation in the future value, I buy what excites me, regardless of what it may be or not be worth 5, 20 or 80yrs down the road. Different strokes, for different folks, it's what makes the world go round.

Oh, I agree.  It wont fit everyones collection.   thumb1

But I'm pretty sure this isn't a fictional weapon.  Its right there... Touch it, feel it, stroke it.    And last time I looked, those ARE soldiers with them in the pics...  Most all of these milsurps were simply stored or perhaps carried around in non wartime activities.   :-\

I get it... Not for everyone.  But lets not start bashing a rare sks thats selling like hotcakes on an sks forum.    :-\

I don't see anything dif here when compared to any other weapon which is like new or 'unissued' etc.  Cherries yugos, new chicoms, as issued russos.. The list goes on and on.

Come to think of it.... How do we know these guns were not involved in plenty of war-use ethnic-cleansing before being selected for HG rework and service?

It wouldn't surprise me if a " Here's your second chance to own 1" add pops up before someone even receives the rifle themselves. Try for a quick flip, just in case there's a second batch of these waiting to be sold.

Could happen, but I doubt it personally.   Seems all these yugos were imported from Slovenia by one importer and certain distributors bought what they wanted for resale.  I haven't seen a 'second chance' B series Dans m59s.

Seems like the stocks have a super high gloss shine on them, like lacquer or something that you can buff up to a shine like that.

I looked pretty closely at all the pics I could find out there.  I didn't want it if it had a fiberglass stock.  It has wood grain and it looks strange because it is not a beat up refurb milsurp like we are used to seeing.   :)

I have an unissued SKS and it looks like that in pictures, but not in person.  That is my take on it.... YMMV

It could just be a color coating of some sorts, almost like the old red century imports guns got.

I passed on them. Mainly because I don't have a spare $700 kicking around but also they just didn't do it for me for some reason. I'm not a collector so that's the other big reason. These are fantastic for a collector, they are purdy and all but they seem odd to me. I guess I'm a chrome it all or not at all kinda guy, don't care for the chrome HG, bayo, etc when the barrel and receiver are blued. Congrats to all who snagged one, they are super cool, just not for me.

Take it easy over here.    :)

Of course AIM knew how many rifles they obtained.  Probably just had multiple cancellations/orders/reorders through the weekend and once they got to the end of the actual shipments...boom...20 more left to sell.  I'm one of the guilty parties causing the mess with some initial cold feet.  Retook the plunge today and it's a stick after moving a couple items this weekend and being a sucker for all things shiny. Should look nice next to my Dan's M59.  :))  Cheers.

Lol.  'AIM sorted through and found an extra crate' sounds alot like they miraculously discovered they had more rifles then they thought.  Highly unlikely they are not aware how many they have total, but I'm glad you updated your post and joined a real sks forum.   rofl

These things happen... Canceled orders and people leaving X amount of rifles in their cart and never checking out etc usually leads to relisting of X amount of rifles but has no bearing on their original totals.

Just keeping it real man...  Hope you settle in, enjoy the site, and keep posting instead of lurking.   thumb1

Does this batch change the opinion that they didn't have chrome deposits so they opted to have non chrome lined barrels?

Is it possible they decided to go without for a reason?  Despite the quality of their builds, were the barrels considered disposable and rather than try make them last forever, just opt to refurb more often?

There seems to be even today a considerable buttload of Yugo barrels available...I cannot remember the last time I couldn't find one easily. Since they kept such meticulous records on these vs. any other country...could it just be they visited the armorer frequently, and were set for planned overhauls, which would replace the sewer pipes?  The patch puller rope that came with mine seems as if it would be as effective as using dental floss for cleaning. Mine actually has weights on both ends, so I don't even know how to use the dang thing.

Aside from demilled chop jobs, I don't recall seeing any other nation's barrels being available as widely as the Yugo barrels.

Might as well link the post as some people might have trouble finding it: http://forums.gunboards.com/showthread.php?411545-Slovenian-Ceremonial-SKS-arrives (http://forums.gunboards.com/showthread.php?411545-Slovenian-Ceremonial-SKS-arrives).

I don't believe they are painted either, just nicely finished.  I don't know about everyone poo-poo'ing the stock, one of the commentators there said he didn't like the buttpad, but I personally think it looks sharp on that stock and makes a heck of a lot of sense to put something like that on a gun where the butt will be on the ground very often...

We are not like certain 'other' boards (*cough* SKSBoards) that ***** out any & all references to SKSFiles or the SKSGuide pages out of fear that someone else might be right and our stuff wrong.  We're wrong pretty darn often actually!  We admit to mistakes and correct them as best we can to get accurate data out there for everyone to use.

The fact that they only link to sites like Yooper's that still call letter guns '1956 Sino-Soviets', still maintain that non /26\ guns simply can't be dated, and continue to utilize the 1956 + million = year of manufacture despite there not being a shred of evidence that this is correct (and in fact multiple lines of evidence to show that it's flat out wrong) pretty much indicates that their true intentions aren't to share accurate information with everyone, but is instead to push some unverified-but-accepted-as-gospel 'expert' narrative onto new collectors.  Then they can puff their chests out and high5 each other about their collective knowledge and all the über-rareness/high dollar-ness of their collections.

Stuff like that is never gonna fly around here as long as I'm around.  bat1

I will say that I sure don't think that wood is elm. If it is, it's sawn way differently.  Maybe beech?  Looks a bit like the original early m59 non-elm stocks, only with no blemishes. They certainly sourced some nice looking wood for these, whatever it is.

New to the forum and new to owning SKSs. I've got one of the ceremonial rifles and one regular 59/66 coming from AIM. Well it's at my FFL (I don't have a current C&R FFL). But he's doing a gun show all weekend, as he works from home. So I must wait to  get my rifles on Monday.

I've heard of one report of someone getting one of the ceremonials and they were not happy with the condition. No pics. So I don't know if they're somehow being unrealistic or if they happened to get one that banged around the crate or something (member of the Survivors board). Someone also supposedly got a regular 59/66 sent instead of a ceremonial. That must have been a mistake, obviously.

Anyway, the report of a disappointing looking ceremonial has me freaked out a little. But of the several I've seen around the web. They have looked excellently minty.

My regular will be shot. I probably won't even clean the ceremonial. I'll just leave on the cosmo. wink1

Whoa...I reread the I signed electronically but they didn't deliver it....personally, I would never do that with a firearm... You technically signed, all they gotta do is say it's been delivered, or leave it, and it just walks away from an unattended house.  I would rather wait till the box is in my grundgy paws, and then sign.  Granted, I hope the delivery guy is honest and has tons of integrity, but if not, prove you didn't recieve it, you already signed, and it is a firearm.

Hopefully I'm just tired and reading it wrong, after 17hrs at work and my mind is just fried from the day..

Anyway, the report of a disappointing looking ceremonial has me freaked out a little. But of the several I've seen around the web. They have looked excellently minty.

My regular will be shot. I probably won't even clean the ceremonial. I'll just leave on the cosmo. wink1

Welcome to SKS-Files Jack.  I read that post about the guy who's sending it back too.  Buyer's remorse and trying to justify sending it back I think.  All the others I've seen have been in perfect condition, you'll be ok.

Good plan in leaving it in the grease.  Best way to keep it mint.  thumb1

Thanks for the welcome. Since I posted the post you quoted. I read somewhere (I don't remember, I'm following several posts on several forums about these) about another person that wasn't completely happy with theirs. Since neither that person or the one who says he's sending it back. Have posted pics as of yet. I don't know if they got a slightly less attractive one. One that got damaged in shipping. Or if they just have unrealistic expectations.  For these things being 30+ years old. I don't necessarily expect a rifle in 100% condition. But being advertised as "unissued'' and AIM posting up pics of new looking guns. I expect damn close to 100%. Get a like new gun, that's 30+ years old is certainly possible. I bought a couple CZ vz. 70's from AIM a few years ago. One was described as "unissued'' and it sure as heck looked like it just rolled of the line.

I was kinda joking about leaving the cosmo on. But I may just do it. Heck. I may need a really large bag to put the rifle in. So I can then vacuum seal the whole thing, cosmo and all.  chuckles1

I will leave mine in cosmoline. I may shoot it when I retire if it wasn't a great investment. Maybe.

Man, they are sure rough on those Yugos!  No wonder some of the buttpads I've seen look a little worn.  I can also see why there's no cleaning rods on them as standard equipment!  :o

Yup. But those soldiers are still pretty decent. clap1

I saw someone mention this on another forum. Certainly, without some sneaking around and perhaps a few bribes. There's no way to be sure how many of the ceremonial rifles there are. But considering that Slovenia only has about 2,060,000 people in it. The country is a little smaller than New Jersey. And their now, fully professional military has only 8,800 total personnel. It might be a minor miracle these ever showed up outside of Slovenia for sale. Of course Slovenia appears to be selling off much of, if not all of their SKS stock. Since they went with the FN F2000S and the old Zastava M70's took over as reserves. Slovenia may still very well have a decent stock of regular SKS and ceremonial rifles. I don't see their ceremonial/honor guards doing those demos with AK rifles.

Never did I say they wouldn't fire, why would they need to or want to. I'm pretty sure them drill dudes didn't didn't dress up in their blinging outfits and take them to the range for qualifying every month. They just twirl, spin and click'em, then polished them and back in the rack.  They didnt need to go bang, bang uh, bang.. But, give me one, I'll shuck stripper after stripper through it, chrome looks good with the blueish tint thumb1 chuckles1

Im just scratching my head wondering why anyone would wanna buy a gun that wasn't made at Zastava as a fully functioning weapon right next to all the others.  I mean, the least they could have done is take regular old combat ready SKS carbines to start with.   ???

At least now we can record all the serial prefixes from these things and apply it to our serial list and perhaps inform all the owners their rifles must also be useless due to being made side/side with these things.   :-\

Since we're talking about honor guards and their weapons. Here's some nice honor guard photos depicting their rifles from all services at yesterday's ceremony. A guy from another forum posted these HG photos. He was present at the ceremony as President Obama welcomed Xi Jinping to the White House for an official State Visit. He was standing behind the Army Honor Guard and captured these photos. These rifles are clearly modified and you can see some obvious mods and missing parts, like the missing extractor on the M14, which you can see on the close-up shot with the Army Honor Guard.

I've looked for Mozambique HG for a long time and never had any luck. The old website Carbines for Collectors had helped perpetuate the Yugo teak myth by claiming that Mozambique had sent Kragujevac a boatload of teak to be used for their HG stocks and I was interested if it could be proven or not.

I picked up my two Yugos earlier today. One ceremonial the other a regular 59/66. The regular is very nice. Some handling marks. But it has a nice (to me anyways) deep dark grain in it. Packed all over the place with heavy cosmo. Came with a sling, two oil bottles (with oil still in them), one that came in a leather pouch with a crap ton of blue patina everywhere. Ammo pouch and since I'm not an expert. Something else that resembles the size of a sausage. Overall very nice. "I" prefix. So made in 1976 or so.

----
The ceremonial was packed in a good amount of cosmo, but not as bad as the normal 59/66. Overall, I'm very happy with it. Looks rather new. 5 or 6 small gouges or indentations. But nothing too bad. I guess it would have been nice if it was 100% perfect. But it being a "Z". It is nearly 30 years old. So all's good. Honestly, it's all probably handling wear/marks from storage/arsenal. Came with the log book. Same metal sausage and the natural colored sling.

Pics tomorrow.

Lucky dog!  A 'Z' seems like a cool serial.

I think a lot of us picked the right time to buy these Yugos.  SKS aficionados were scrapping over ugly beat up refurbs not long ago on auction sites.

Got my V today.  Looks exactly like everyone else's including the rubber over the sights.
