New Butt pad for my Monte Carlo Stock

Some may have seen I had a WYB listing for an OEM Butt pad for an SKS-M Monte Carlo stock. Well, Murray hooked me up with an aftermarket grind to fit that actually looks close in height to the original one. Got it yesterday and fit it onto the stock today. In spite of a couple of dings in the wood due to not having a pad on it, I think it turned out pretty good. Thanks to Ben @ Murray's

Very nice indeed. How hard/easy is that rubber to grind to profile once you have it attached? Did you mark a perimeter line and grind to that, or how do you keep from taking the finish off the buttstock?

What were the recoil pad's measurements prior to grinding?

I got mine from Ben at Murray's Gunsmithing. It is a NOS from Alpha that he picked up so you'd have to check with him to see if he has any left to sell. He has a sub-forum here like he did at the other forum that is now defunct. You can PM him through there. As to the size it was well oversized, but easily ground down. I used my 1" bench sander initially with my 6" disc bench sander to finish for a smooth final touch. I had to drill in a new hole for the bottom as the spread was narrower than the original hole spread on the stock, but it worked well and the finished product looks real close to the OEM part.

Sorry RM I just saw this. When I worked at a gunsmith shop we had a butt pad fitting triangle to grind pads down with a nice 9" disc sander. I don't have access to that anymore so I set the raw pad in place on the stock screwing into the top hole only and squaring it up. Then I took a scribe (looks like a pen, but is a fine steel point instead of ink point) and I traced the perimeter of the stock staying as vertical as possible. I did the rough grind on the 1"x21" belt sander and finished with my 6" disc sander to fine tune the lines and smooth it out at the curves.

I was very happy with it.

And Monaderio, IIRC it was about 5"x1.875" overall but with a shorter hole pattern than the M stock. It was easy enough to set a new bottom hole though and I used the existing top hole on the stock with the top hole on the pad.

Edited to correct dimensions, it was 1.875" NOT 2.875"

I temporarily took a different path. I bought a recoil pad that almost matches the shape of my buttstock. I only need to grind the lower part. On Saturday, I'll go to the local gun show and see if I can find anything close to the original.

I almost went that route, but also had a WTB thread going on various forums. Ben Murray saw my thread and hooked me up.

Turned out nice Alan.
I ran into a similar issue with a Savage 325 salvage. The original butt plate went missing and I used a Hogue pad turn upside down and finish dressed with a Dremel. PAX

Worst thing on mine is I had an original for a long time and finally sold it off thinking I'd never have a need for it.

This is why guys who tinker with firearms should never...ever... get rid of anything 'cause you never know when you'll need something.

Screws will be replaced. I just found a few in my toolbox and used them to secure the recoil pad in place.

I froze the recoil pad overnight before using the brad-point wood drill bit to enlarge holes for hiding the screw heads.

Really neat idea to temporarily firm up the rubber to allow you to cut it without tearing. Looks great!
