What to look for? What to avoid? Prices?
Tks! ::)

What are you looking for? A typical refurbished M91/30 rifle, M38 or M44 carbines, M91 long rifles, M1907 carbine, or Finnish M24, M27, M28, M28/30, M39, etc. models?

To get you started.

Some out of date info but generally good for the basics
http://7.62x54r.net/

Great info on the details, production numbers, markings, refurbishment arsenals etc.
https://www.m9130.info/

Prices: Advanced Search; select "Completed Items"; enter search term, e.g., Mosin; select bolt action rifles, or curio and relic; sort by "bid count: high to low".
https://www.gunbroker.com/

Basic refurbished M91/30s are $300-450 these days. What are known as "Hex" receivers in the collecting community (actually half of a regular octagon with a rounded bottom) tend to fetch prices at the high end of that range; more than the round receivers. Spanish Civil War M91/30s are desirable. They were imported long before the 1968 GCA mandated import marks, but some of them were marked "Made in USSR" or mistakenly "Made in URRS". They often have crude wire sling hangers. Finnish M91/30s are marked with the [SA] for Suomi Armeijan (Finnish Army). They bring a premium, $350-550.

Then there's Dragoons, exDragoons, Cosacks, Belgian rebarrels, sleeved barrels, pre war, post war, war time, Snipers and faux Snipers, trainers, captures, recaliber, Chinese, Russian, Romanian, Finnish, Polish, Hungarian, United States, even a Czech variant.  One thing about it.. the Mosin and the x54r have probably seen more wars than any other service rifle.

Open the can of worms...  :)
I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse......

Leave the gun, take the cannoli.

From what I've read you should be asking RM about Mosins!  rofl2

Bacarnal

Yeah, he's secretly got a huge stash of them but refuses to admit it Besplode. rofl

Great info guys - thanks!  I'll try to learn more about them myself....always had one in the back of my mind.thumb1

The 7.62x54R round looks as though it would be a bruiser in a bolt action rifle.    :o

The round is no worse than .303 or .30-06, all of which have fairly similar case capacities, use the same bullet weight range, have similar velocities, etc.  Both my M1D and Mosin Sniper print fairly accurately.

It's really not that bad, especially if fired from 91 or 91/30 as opposed to 91/38(59). Plus if you really want to shoot it properly you are supposed to put the bayonet on, which adds even more weight.

It's not a little SKS.. but not bad in my book, I've got way...way worse, but a light weight M38 with heavy ball will wake you.....and others up. :)  chuckles1

Okay - thanks.

My Garands are very mild on recoil...but I haven't ever tried the "mack-daddy" 30-06 in a bolt gun.   rofl2

Bacarnal

My M1903A3 and Mosin using a similar bullet weight have (to me) a similar recoil.  182gr Heavy ball out of the Sniper are a bit more of a shove.

Why I oughta! bat1

You don’t really want a Mosin high noon.  One you get the first one, the second won’t be too far behind... Mark my words.

Weapon weight plays into it... Garand about 10 pounds, M1903 and M91/30 right about 8.7-9 pounds, the M44 has the weight advantage as well with the added bayonet, an M38 and M91/59 carbine is about 7.7 pounds...

Justin Hell

I have gone for five years without getting a third.  One 91/30, one T53.
I learned the hard way with the T53 and the heavy ball....and the stomping on the bolt to get it open after.
:)

Bacarnal

The way RM worded his statement kinda insinuates he DOES have not only one but SOME rofl rofl2.

Justin, rubber mallet chuckles1!!!

WOW!  Now that is an amazing collection of Mosins.  :o :o :o  How many years have you been buying them?

Bacarnal

Hey GM, you might want to check that center one in front.  I think its oil pan gasket has gone bad... rofl

I'd never lie about something so grave as a Mosin Nagant!  didnt do

But yes on the small mallet.  Only sure way to cycle 'em w/o bruising your hand badly.  rofl

BRAVO ZULU for the inputs! After viewing hours of vids, scanning dozens & dozens of pages, scoping out Gunbreaker and a couple of other auction sites... along with production numbers, countries of origin, hundreds of variants, 'opinions', values, collecting, shooting, right down to "sneaks", the "r" argument ('rimmed' or 'Russian'), bayonets that attach/won't attach, stock insignias, scrubbed stampings, mixed pieces and parts, "mystery" Mosins, slings (correct/incorrect)... and myriad other stuff too complex to list; I've sorta-kinda settled on the M44 carbine.

Now, its how to convince my other half that a third 40-rifle gun safe makes sense!
