Got this yesterday. Tapco stock along with an unnumbered wood stock that has about 1 inch cut off and another plastic sporter stock. Also 6 Tapco duckbill mags and almost 400 rounds of Silver Bear. Guy had a scope on it and his son started hunting with this rifle.

I searched around a bunch but couldn't find any info on guns with these markings so I come here begging for info.

1978 arsenal [0136] commercial rifle with a lot of missing stuff.I have a 1976 type 56 from that same arsenal but imported by Navy Arms with all matching numbers and a LH type 4 scope rail riveted to it.

Yup, 1978. Neutered bayonet lug and cleaning rod retaining notch on the front sight base. Likely done by Norinco for the AWB era, especially if the bluing looks consistent.

What's up with the ribbed barrel? I have to look at the extra plastic stock for any markings, may have been marketed as some sort of sporter? He included the original numbered mag.

It's normal, seen quiet a few like that, seen it on Mak 90s and others. I have one or two with that style barrel, even my Mak 90s have it.
I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse......

Leave the gun, take the cannoli.

I said I was an addict........I didn't say I had a problem

Went back and looked at the date info here and now I see where the 1978 timeframe comes from. Thanks everyone.
I looked just now at past auctions on GB and it doesn't seem to be anything special and with mine missing the stock and having modified components this may be my bubba project gun.

Hey Lowell, nice little bubba piece ya got there.

BTW, I make a folding adapter for that stock if you're interested, making up 2 now so one more wouldn't be a problem, lol.

I have a AK 74 with an Ace folder and another 47 with an underfolder so I think I will leave this one as is for now.

Thanks for the offer on the handgrip. I want to see if I can find a cheese grater style with the round holes.

Spoke with my machinest buddy last night. He said no problem on cutting, crowning, cutting a pin slot etc. Probably gonna cut reverse threads too to hang some kind of ornament on the end. He cut a Polytech M1A for me and threaded it for a Miculek comp. We are a great team. I come up with these bright ideas and he does the skill part.

Happy New Year all you commi gun loving folks!

The bolt cover is drilled and tapped for a scope base and I have an old scope so... I think I will do the drill and tap bolt cover mod to replace the hold down lever and TRY to keep the scope zeroed. Anyone done this? Looking for drill size, thread size, source for a nice black button head bolt etc.

Got my cheesegrater on and the next step is the barrel chop. The bayo lug is messed up so I was thinking about removing the front sight assembly and cutting it right behind the sight post. It would then be pinned to the barrel with one pin only which should be fine? Clean things up and drop a little weight. We do not have access to a mill so any advice on cutting the pin slot?

While it's chucked up cut some threads too. I was thinking 5/8x24 but looks close on having enough material.

So, if I understand correctly, you are going to leave enough of the machined part of the barrel that the FSB presses onto to re-install just the front portion of the assembly and thread on a muzzle device.(about 1.25"-1.5")
First part, the muzzle device, you will want to use M14-1 muzzle device and threading die for that. Either LH(AK type) or RH(Yugo M59/66 type) You can use 9/16"-24, but I recommend sticking with metric.
As for the pin groove, I have not tried this yet, but have heard of threading the pin holes on each side of the sight and using set screws to pinch and lock the sight in place. Definitely would want to make sure of alignment and boresight it before appying any loc-tite to the screws. I would use red loc-tite for sure.
You can also start with a hacksaw and then a drill bit to create a crude pin slot, but good luck getting it lined up properly so your post doesn't end up canted.

To add, 5/8 requires .60" diameter and you only have .51" at the machined sight area. Behind the machined are is .58" which would be M15-1

The black rifle is cut that way, to use a neutered FSB, then recrowned and an 11* muzzle face cut.
The cheese grater rifle is cut to 16.5" and has a 14X1 LHT short TriDelta brake, same muzzle work. If you go further than the stock FSB undercut, you need to use an annular cutter for the 14X1 thread die OD. PAX
