have a somewhat early chicom sks with no import marks , found in a hole in a wall small gun shop some years back , been tucked away ever since , havnt even ever fired this one

was discussing it with someone on another board and we were curious what it looked like under the wood , all and all not bad , sides pitted on receiver  , barrel in better condition

as i was putting it back together i get to the rod and noticed this

Looks like it will hold a cleaning patch perfectly...but it makes me wonder who went to the trouble to drill out that slot? Maybe it was from a completely different rifle?

Usually cleaning rods are held in place by that nub under the front sight. I've never seen one protrude past it. (If it did, it would just slide right out.)

Did it come with a cleaning kit in the stock?

Neat!
I just got a 34kish earlier barreled receiver and built a gun around it...it is very nice to see an unfettered version of just how old an early 57 should look.
I have had a rod like that...but I don't think I do any longer....or I am gonna have to do some looking around to see where it might live.  I could swear that I just thought it was from a different gun, I fear what I may have done to it...if this is indeed honest to goodness for this gun.

Does it just stop before being able to go fully in, or did you not have the bayonet halfway open when installing it? As mentioned above, it should have the head rest betwixt those nubs on the front sight.

thats the thing , it has the little barrel on the end that fits in the cradle (with the hole through it) , this one has a patch slot on the  threaded end of the rod , ive never seen a patch slot not only on the threaded end but two inches up

Looks to me like that is an 11M SN, which would make it a '66 if that is what I think it is in front of the 37. Makes sense too, since it has a spike bayonet and the stock is number matching. Possible VN bringback where an AK rod was added in the field maybe???

it does in fact go all the way in and measures 15 3/4 inches  , i pulled one from one of y other chicoms and it measures 11 9/16 , bothe threaded ends look identical with the same step after the threads and before the shaft starts

i'll be honest ive never seen a rod like this on any of my AKs ,SKS's or any other weapon , the patch slot on the threaded end

Prolly swapped out at some point. If that's how it fit's as in you picture, it doesn't fit at all. I have a few of those types off various bolt guns. PAX

Dangit, you're right...I should have clicked and blown it up. that 11 is quite faint otherwise. Many other reasons I shouldn't have replied to this...especially because I do seem to remember that rod being an AK rod, and I think I cut the one I had off and rethreaded it to bolt a Choate brake on with a nut in the cleaning rod hole.  Brainflatulence!

My original Egyptian Maadi RML  AKM type has a slotted cleaning rod like that.It has a 15-3/4" o.a.l. A Type 56 standard rifle has a 17-17-1/4" o.a.l. rod usually. Dunno.

That's a good thought Bubba...Hey Hoo, measure the rod and let us know what the length is please.
