Okay, I don't know if a thread like this will take off or not but I saw this auction listing for an SKS. First I  :)) and that was immediately followed by the thought: "What's wrong with this picture?"

Starting off with an easy one:

Answer if you wish and post other peculiarities you come across.

My Avatar is a pic of the real "Ghost" SKS in honor of xxxsks(joe). It is a pic of a fully decked out SKS in Capco hunter's kit. This was mine, the only other pic I had ever seen of one was Joe's.

Phosphorus32

Good job guys  thumb1 I didn't think that would take long. Rather funny looking Chinese with the loooong bayonet.

Very good. Next question is almost as easy: what bayonet belongs on that carbine and why?

Spike. Later type bayonet swivel.

Yup, no lightening cuts in the bayonet lug or the bolt carrier.

Phosphorus32

This one is an oldie but a goodie.

I was looking at it because of another curiosity. Second picture to come.

Bayo upside down.

Yup. A popular mistake for first time SKS owners to make in a thorough cleaning.

Phosphorus32

This is the second part of the upside down spike bayonet SKS. Not anything an owner did, but it's something unusual.

No factory stamp on the side of the receiver

No factory stamp on the side of the receiver

As Shoot The Refurbs said, no /26\ stamp, (or whatever arsenal manufactured it), to the left of the SN.

Also, no 五六式 stamp to the right of the /26\ stamp, between the /26\ and the serial number.

Although, with all the crazy variations we've run across I could be missing something obvious.  dntknw1

Short screw barrel lug, later sight base, stamped trigger group,  "U" after serial possibly applied by importer.  Maybe an unmarked  M21?

Phosphorus32

STR, FC, good call.

Bacarnal, good observations on the characteristics. The M21 idea is a good thought, but it seems unlikely as no M21s have been observed with a "12" date code.

The picture is low resolution but if you blow it up it's apparent that it's a Poly USA import (stamp #2 or #3) in the importer sticky.

If you assume that they didn't scrub a final digit when they scrubbed the Type 56 and arsenal stamps, or scrub the serial number entirely, i.e., the serial number is original, then it can't be a /26\ since they were using an 8 digit serial number. Besides, the fonts don't match to a 1967 Jianshe.

Triangle arsenals that started producing in 1966 or 1967 include: 106, 116, 256, 416 and 666, all of which have the 7 digit serial number format. None of them have a verified serial number that is as high as, or higher than the one shown, 11716. There are a few other triangle arsenals with verified 1968 examples that could have been producing in 1967.
Oval 974 has a verified 12 year code but again, nothing as high as this 11K example.

Honestly, this one is a bit of a stumper and I don't know the answer  rofl

I actually have a few of these odd guys in the archive of photos.  I have them filed under my "No Stamp" directory since it's not clear where they actually belong.  Fonts are all over the place though.  They are interesting guns from a "What's the story on these" perspective:

Even have a '13' prefix, though I can't guarantee that these are the same 'series' or whether there is a series of these to begin with:

Interesting, that are all falling in a seven digit serial with the letter as an afterthought.  I couldn't see, but are all short barrel lugged?
