How would one go about repairing the sling swivel so as keep it straight and not have it crooked as shown in the picture?

1. Need to make sure the "tunnel" in the stock fixture through with the "wire" swivel passes is crimped down enough that the swivel doesn't flop around too much.
2. Need to make sure that the first bend on both sides of the swivel portion that passes through the "tunnel" is near 90 degrees. Obviously, any bending should be done after you've got it lined up correctly, rotated about 45 degrees counterclockwise from its current alignment.

Thanks Phosphorus32 for the advice, what would you recommend to "crimp" the loop? This stock is from a 1959/1960 letter gun (W0154) that I got from a online auction.

May be some plyers?  I think you guys are really over thinking it.   :P

long-nose pliers or get another and replace it.

I'd pull the hanger off, take a hammer and punch and restake the flat folded loop tighter on the wire itself, reinstall. Bending a steel wire that heavy could lead to breaking it, if you were even able to get ahold of it enough with pliers. Remember...the wire part was probably heated, stamped and formed all at the same time, so it's probably more or less hardened to some extent from the forming process...and could be brittle. Bending a 90degree bend in wire that heavy with pliers with so little to grab is a task even if the wire was just mild steel.

I've seen a lot of Spanish Civil War Mosins, people try to bend the wire sling hangers to disassemble the rifle...only to have them snap in two, then you have...nothing.
I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse......

Leave the gun, take the cannoli.

I said I was an addict........I didn't say I had a problem

Take it off.
You should be able to get a good clear look at the assembly, and how it's supposed to be in it's final form.
Compare it to another if you have one.
A vice would be my weapon of choice for a nice, straight, slow re-crimp.
Metal on metal can scratch any finish, as well as put a nice idiot mark into the metal itself, so cover the jaws of whatever you use.

Over 25 years in the metal fab business taught me a thing or two.........
