I'm really more of a Russian kinda guy, but on a whim i ordered a Chinese 'military', and its not as easy to figure out what i got.
The stock is rough, i mean texture wise, not quite chainsaw art, but rough. and it almost all matches, the magazine is a different number.
heres some of the serial number to start with.

Nice!

99% sure it's a /216\ with that uber tall 1 in the stamp  An image out of the stock would be needed to 100% verify but I can't think of what else it could be.  16 prefix indicates 1971 production date.  First 16 series in /216\ I've ever seen (though we do have 15, 17, 18, & 23 documented.)

I had heard that the Russian supply up there was drying up and being replaced with higher priced Chinese imports.  Is this a newly imported gun from one of the big distributors up there (Westrifle, Lever Arms etc.?)  Looks like a pretty nice one though that stock is interesting.  Original stock would be a side swivel with a S/N containing the last 5 digits of the receiver S/N (the 15 and 17s are side swivel guns with the last 5, I assume the 16s would have continued that).  The 15 was a short lug barrel while the 17 was a pinned barrel.  Looks like the 16 was the transition year.  Neat gun w/good info!  thumb1

If you feel up to it, I would appreciate a full suite of photos to enter it into the ARSENAL COMPONENT CONFIGURATIONS section (see: http://sks-files.com/index.php?topic=1788.0).

i will have to take it out of the stock i guess.
I didnt like it about 2 hours ago, but now its `rare` and made the year i was born i may have to keep it.

running-man

Definitely /216\.  Very nice indeed!  thumb1

I don't know about rare, but certainly one of the more uncommon ones.  At least 5570 built from this factory in '71 per the S/N.

I got it from tradeex up here, it was almost the same price as a Russian, and i cant figure out how to justify another Russian.  Unless i go full beanie baby and start doing the one of each year thing.
Would this actually have been military production as they said?

There are many of us down here who wish we would have beanie babied....you should take heed of our discontent down here. Once it dries up or political tensions cause stoppage altogether, you will look fondly upon these days.

This would have been a military production gun from that date...yes.

Nice to see some Chinese examples showing up too. While I don't have a /216\ I do have a couple from that era, and they were cranking out some pretty nice guns at the time. Does yours have a stamped or milled trigger group?

Loose}{Cannon

Nice example of a 216 you have there, and as Rm pointed out it closes a gap in our data from that arsenal!   All good stuff..  thumb1

Get RM a crap-ton of pics if you can please...

1776 will commence again if you try to take our firearms... It doesn't matter how many Lenins you get out on the street begging for them to be taken.

newchi

this one has a stamped trigger, the example on the website was milled so i guess they have a mix in stock.
A lot of our sks's seem to come from ukrainian storage and that has been drying up.
I regularly see sks's in the stores without all matching parts but i have 3 nice Russians already.

Does the sight ladder serial (on the underside of it) match the receiver?  It is interesting that it is a Russian sight ladder while it shows (from the pics thus far) all late features for Chinese...and usually by then you would see a D rather than the 'n'.

I would have thought all the Russian parts would have dried up by then...if it is matching I would find that as an interesting attribute.

Theres numbers under the sight ladder?! :o
i will look.

I dont see any serial number

Loose}{Cannon

They dont always have them... no worries
