Good Afternoon From Hot Houston, TX.

I am new to the SKS.  I shot my brother-in-laws SKS while on vacation and really enjoyed the way it shoots and its looks -- I had to buy one.  I probably should have spent some time here first but that is the way it goes.  I bought my first Norinco SKS yesterday and am enjoying learning about them.  I bought from a collector who says he bought it from an importer, cleaned the cosmoline off of it, and shot one round out of it to make sure it works. He claims it has been in the safe ever since.  I believe him as it looks like it has had very little if any use.  I've torn it down and it still has some cosmoline that needs to be cleaned out of it.  From the markings it appears to be an early 70's model with a serial of 6-1615XXX.  It has no Chinese symbols on it and a arsenal code of 0406. Although it is a later model that is fine with me.  I bought it to shoot and not necessarily to have as an antique investment. I find military history and weapons history fascinating.

I served in the USN and retired from ATT after 25 years.  I am now an 8th grade science teacher but am anything but the stereotypical liberal teacher.  I believe in a strict interpretation of The Constitution and rugged individualism.  I teach 8th grade science and enjoy physics a great deal.  I have been married for 41 years and have 2 grown boys.  I don't know how much I can contribute but I look forward to listening and learning about the SKS.  Here she is:

Welcome from N-Texas Maxwell !!

I think you will fit right in here....  You have a pic of your arsenal stamp by any chance?

1776 will commence again if you try to take our firearms... It doesn't matter how many Lenins you get out on the street begging for them to be taken.

Welcome max, you will fit right in here. Very nice looking carbine you have, and thanks for your service.

Welcome from a former Houstonian.  thumb1

You are off to a great start, but beware....they multiply like rabbits once you are hooked. :)

Welcome maxwell!

You picked a great gun... that particular arsenal stamp has been reported to be one of the more accurate SKSs out there.

It's also unique because it's the only arsenal that used a month of production identifier. We have a thread going about them here:

/406b Info and Data Collection in Chinese SKS (Military) - Page 1 of 4

Please post your pics up in that thread so we can get it added to the list! :)

Right...   There is actually zero evidence supporting 0406 are the numbers in this stamp.  We have it listed as a ? stamp and shown below as ?5.   We try our best to not turn fiction into fact here in the FILES.   thumb1

Greetings from NM Tom!

Very nice carbine you have there.  There are quite a few of them floating around it seems, but seeing one in such nice condition is great!  thumb1

Welcome to the boards, please make yourself at home.  If you have any questions, ask away.

Article 16th. Right to bear arms; standing armies; military power subordinate to civil -  Vermont Constitution

That the people have a right to bear arms for the defence of themselves and the State - and as standing armies in time of peace are dangerous to liberty, they ought not to be kept up; and that the military should be kept under strict subordination to and governed by the civil power.
