Hey guys!

Looking at a Svt40 that a guy has for sale.  I do t know much about them...other than I have been wanting one for some time.  The rifle is in my possession for inspection.  What can/ should I look for on this rifle to determine if I should buy it?  I will post a pic of the rifle and any close ups that you request when I get back home....date night with wife....

Thanks

Never owned one myself, but Blicero is always complaining about broken and cracked hand guards (that he is usually the cause of)  rofl

They are pricey, but if you can grab one in decent working condition with a good bore for under ten bills, you're doing pretty good these days.   thumb1

The gas system and gas adjuster...replacement parts are available in stainless steel, but it sucks to get it home and find it all seized up.

And personally, it looks cool as heck, but I hate shooting it, cause its a pain to clean, lotsa little parts and pieces.

Is the bolt blued, or is it [SA] stamped?
I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse......

Looks like a mint russo furb to me with blued bolt and EPs on side of mag etc.

1776 will commence again if you try to take our firearms... It doesn't matter how many Lenins you get out on the street begging for them to be taken.

Thanks for putting up the pic LC!  Date night with the wife...yup, I said that :o  GM...good call on the gas system.  test fired 5 rds of silver bear.  It reminded me of my remington 742 woodsmaster, the best single shot automatic on the market.

I am going to have to bargain down the price with the gas system all farged up!  Is it a simple cleaning or is it buying new parts?  I have to go to youtube to learn how to take it apart...

is there anything in particular that you guys would like a pic of?

Off to youtube!

If it ain't cycling, start lowballing and work up, or the other, hand it back and say get your broke down over priced POS outta my face.

Sometimes, fleabay or GB has cheap junker parts. I got mine from the link below, afterward, tuning was much easier.  But, I still hate cleaning it.

To answer your question about cycling:

Clean out the chamber. Make sure no grease is in there.

You need to unscrew the gas piston, soak the inside of it with hoppes, let it sit. Clean it out with a qtip. Run a brush inside the gas hole too. Get all that carbon and/or cosmo out.

Then you need to set the gas level to 1.2. Make sure the face of that nut with the numbers on it is squarely level. \

If it still doesn't cycle, move the gas level to 1.3.
I highly doubt, unless you're shooting conservative handloads, you'll need more gas than 1.3.

Make sure your recoil springs are not kinked and are properly installed on the guide rod. Replace them if they seem wonky.

Make sure the piston is screwed firmly into the gun.

You really need a gas tool to do all this. I suggest you use these issues as a negotiating point. There is no problem on a Tok that can't be simply solved so don't be afraid to buy it. Just don't dick with anything until you have the right tool.

I have 2 SA Toks with gas pistons that are pitted and nasty as **** but they still shoot. The problem lies elsewhere.

Also look at the extractor. It's possible that part is dicked if you're getting 0 extraction whatsoever. I'm leaning more towards a gas leak or blockage though.

Forgot to say that the guy says he has a scope mount for the svt40.  He says it is real because of the way it sounds when he taps on it or something....
Does this even sound right?

Beautiful rifle John, I vote you go for it if you really want it. There's a great knowledge base here to help you with it.

And if it still doesn't work...blame it on Greasemonkey and Blicero!  ;)   chuckles1

I was googling pics of SVT40 slings.  Is the sling on the rile in the pic a navy sling (for the stock with the Mosin-like slot in the buttstock)?

Thanks
