Well, I just picked up my first Tula SKS. I have one more that should be here Thursday.   I'll call this one my trade SKS because I traded  One of my Rifle'S for it  and I'll call my incoming my gun broker SKS.

:o Nice!! An open numbered 1954 I have been looking for one of these, hard to find. This is where the 4 is open on the back side vs. closed all the way around!
Congrats

Not to get off subject here but I wonder if we should separate the different stamps of each year in the Russian serial number registry, could help us crack the Russian code on the serial numbers........1954's with closed 4 have these certain prefixes and 54's with open have these, might narrow it down possibly...whats your thoughts on this?

You know Tony, in all honesty, my Russian SKS knowledge is pretty limited.  I've got lots of bits and pieces but haven't really put the effort in to putting them all together like I have with the Chinese type 56s.  I had no idea that there were open vs closed 4's on the receiver covers.  I've been meaning/planning/procrastinating on posting up various receiver cover tops that I've got from '49s all the way through the blanks (I've probably got 50 different receiver cover tops to compare and contrast).  There are lots of variations that I've seen (but I haven't been able to document yet) in the Tula stars, arrows, and now it seems in the numbers/font too.  If we can categorize them, maybe we can assign S/N blocks to certain changes in the receiver covers.  It's a really good idea.  thumb1

(And sorry for the mini hijack 56cbr600rr.)  That's a darn fine SKS you have there.  Heck of a find for your first one.  thumb1

Very nice... swung for the fence on the first purchase.

1776 will commence again if you try to take our firearms... It doesn't matter how many Lenins you get out on the street begging for them to be taken.

Do both 1953 and 1954 usually have the serial number on the butt plate?

The 54 does but I believe the incoming 53 does not.  Curious.

Some non-refurbs do some don't but it does seem weird they did some and not others. In my collection of non-refurbs I would say half have it and half don't.
