What kind of ammo? Hand loads or factory loads?  Ammo details..  Ammo issues can also cause this issue.

Before I fault the barrel/chamber, I'd try several different brands of ammo. Maybe the ammo had an unseen issue, like RM said, some rifles have a preference for ammo. Trying several different flavors of ammo from a cost stand point is a whole lot easier, cheaper and time conserving than jumping in feet first into a full blown barrel swap.

The ground finally dried out enough to take the Russian SKS outside. I shot Wolf and Barnaul ammo with similar, but not identical results.  With the Wolf ammo, on the left  target, keyholing was present on every shot.    With the Barnaul ammo, on the right, the keyholing was less pronounced.

        For each target I shot 5 rounds at 10 yards and 5 rounds at 20 yards.
