K,
This was a discussion a while back in the Ak world. The "tail" was found to actually be a 4, not a 0.
Polytech AK's are only found with two factory stamps, /416\ & (386). No others. (Norinco MAK90's were all /66\)
Here's the deal.
Example of controversial 016/416 on SKS with Tail (4):
Polytech made in 1985, identical as ours, and so are all the others pre- 1986.
Updated Polytech 416 stamping, 1987.
All the rest of the Polytechs that I have seen post 86' have this updated mark, the old stamp does not exist post 86'.
416 stamp is updated post 86' to look more prominent.
The "tail" is not a bur ::)
There is just as many pics showing NO tail... thats the problem. The last one you show is very dif then one in question.
I will try to get a better picture of mine if that helps.

Well did you even read my post? The /416\ on the bottom is very different BECAUSE its post-86, all beforehand are the other, older variation, both on Polytech Ak's and SKS's.
And yes, there are many without a tail, those would be /016\ or a broken stamp /416\, but the tail is a /416\, the Polytech timeline is proof

Looks like it has the tail, I say 416. There is no reason a 0 should have a tail as if it were a 4. We know for a fact there is a 416 factory, both on the Polytechs and the written out "416 M21"'s
Also, just doing a quick google search, can't find me a single /016\, all /416\ with tail, or covered by the stock which is why people dont realize it has the tail, kind of like mine
Well.. Yeah ahuk ahuk.. Iza read yo post.
My issue is.... Its very dif which could mean a dif location stamp all together. What proof is there the stamp 'changed' and its not a new stamp?
Either way... having both is pissin me off. One of them is getting axed from the list.

Polytech 85 - Old tail stamp
Polytech 86 - Old tail stamp (from what ive found) v Changes
Polytech 87 - New 416 Stamp
Polytech 88 - New 416 Stamp

Oh.. look what happens when you dont use 416 as the search term.

No, I provided proof. Accept it or not, I dont need and approval stamp to acknowledge the obvious. I have a feeling most will agree that these are 416's, its common knowledge in the Ak community who has the same exact stamp.

If you can't see that it's impossible to tell in that picture, then you need glasses. Carl has one with the tail that you can barely see in a close up picture, but says it obviously has the tail in person. Your one picture is ****. Find me another. I can find you as many /416\'s as you'd like. And no, I googled /016\ and saw 3 /416\'s, this ****ty picture, and a bunch under the wood line. MOST ARE UNDER THE WOOD LINE. Mine is, many are, and if the tail is under there, people will immedietely say /016\.
And I dont deny there may be an /016\, I'm saying most are 416's, the ones with the tail ARE 416's, and there IS a difference.
The timeline says it all.

Ok, the way I have understood this Chinese mess:
Poly Tech is/was made by a Poly Tech factory. They were exported by Poly Tech in China and imported by very few importers, such as K.F.S. and P.T.I. Some importers, not only handled Poly Tech, but also imported Norinco weapons, so it's possible, like Keng's to find both manufactures back in the day. PolyTech labled weapons also carry their own specific factory numbers.
WipedOut (http://chicom47.com/Pics/PolyTech/PolyTech.htm)
Today, the pretty much exclusive importer of the brand name is Poly Technologies | The Original Chinese AK47 and SKS Rifle Parts (http://stores.polytechparts.com/)
Ok, finally fixed my mistake when I split this topic off the previous PS thread.
I've got 136 images of /016\ / /416\ SKSs. Of the shots that show arsenal stamps, I've got about 5 that show a clear /416\ through the 17 mil to 24 mil time period. I have one fairly decent shot of one with a very iffy looking 4 that could easily look like a zero. The rest are all below the woodline or are too low resolution to be of any real use in this exercise. I'll blow up the relevant marks and then we can decide wha we think. I'm strongly leaning /416\. The AK stuff Mitch produced I hadn't seen before (I'll be the first to say I'm clueless when it comes to AKs) thumb1
New to the board but this is a subject that I've wondered about for a long time. Is there a picture of the "Arsenal 016" rifles with the number in an oval, say like the 974 or the 386 in-the-oval arsenal stamps? Example of the 974:
(http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/b436/firstchoice14/Chinese%20SKS%20Rifle%20762x39mm-State%20Arsenal%20974%20Mfg/SAM_3551.jpg) (http://s1043.photobucket.com/user/firstchoice14/media/Chinese%20SKS%20Rifle%20762x39mm-State%20Arsenal%20974%20Mfg/SAM_3551.jpg.html)
I've seen references to the 016, but never a pic of one. But my own experiences show the triangle 416, on my Security Forces SKS, and my "M". I've also seen the triangle 416 on a Receiver Cover with scope rail mounted on it.
LC, I can't tell anything from the last pic you posted, (too blurry), but the first one you posted shows the "leg".
A pic of my "M":
(http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/b436/firstchoice14/Chinese%20SKS-M%20762x39mm%20Carbine/2015-05-10%20Chinese%20Arsenal%20Stamps_416%20004_zpscnsrrem2.jpg) (http://s1043.photobucket.com/user/firstchoice14/media/Chinese%20SKS-M%20762x39mm%20Carbine/2015-05-10%20Chinese%20Arsenal%20Stamps_416%20004_zpscnsrrem2.jpg.html)
And of the scope rail I referred to, (Also a blurry pic): (pulled from the web)

I don't have my Security Forces next to me to take a better, clearer pic of, but here's an old pic of it:

IMO, the first pic you posted could have a leg. The top of the stamp is MUCH deeper in the metal, indicating an uneven strike. The bottom of the stamp is much more shallow and it looks like the leg of the stamp just tickled the receiver.
Also, I see some of these guns with KFS import stamps. I spoke to Kengs a while back about the $50 certificate they offer for any SKS or AK that was imported through PolyTech (the importer, not the manufacturer). They said they have arsenal and production numbers for all those guns. Has anyone ever paid to get the info on their KFS/Polytech SKS to see exactly what's on the certificate?
GM posting on the old thread was my fault. I moved them while he was in the process of posting and he got left behind. I'll send the short bus with padded rubber walls to pick him up and merge his post with this topic so we're all on this page for once and for all.
Anywhoo, I've got 4 examples that I think are pretty indicative of /416\. The quality isn't the best, but Ive blown them up for better detail:
First is a 17th year gun:
Another 17th year gun only about 3000 down the line (though this is to be expected if there is a broken stamp or something)
Next is an 18th year gun (I could still believe a broken stamp here, but you're getting pretty iffy)
and finally a 24th year gun with two different views of the stamp. There is absolutely no way the Chinese would be using a broken stamp for 7 full years, especially in a mid production facility like /016\ / /416\.
I think adding this to the points FirstChoice made earlier about not seeing "016" anywhere else, but seeing "416" in *lots* of places including on totally different lines of guns like AKs pretty much settles it for me. The images of /016\ with the small portion below the 0 missing could be explained by numerous things:
- There really is a /016\ stamp and it is distinctly different than /416\.
- The /416\ stamp has broken at the tail on the 4 (high stress area there so it would make sense) and the /016\ we see missing the tail are pretty much grouped together until they noticed and/or replaced the stamp.
- The /016\ stamp is really a /416\ stamp and the lighting and image quality are poor enough that we think we're seeing something we're not.
The Arsenal Stamp on my "M" is not a traditional "stamp", more like an engraving, or etching. Not quite sure of the technique? With the clear picture of that stamp, the Chinese would not have added the leg to another form of stamping, out of another mistake. I "think" there is enough evidence to prove the existence of an Arsenal 416. I haven't seen the evidence to prove the 016 in a clear and repeated example. Pictures are hard to decipher. I have yet to hold a 416 in my hands that didn't have the "leg". JMHO

No worries about posting auctions here. We don't have asinine 'you must follow the unwritten rules or be banned' policies that sksboards has.
The AK stamps are clearly /416\. The SKS M stamps are clearly /416\ too. It's some of the early ones that are less clear, but I think a case could be made that they are all /416\s. I've been focusing in on the early stamps with the pointy topped 1 that are less clear. Same pointy topped 1 as in your example. All good data though. thumb1
Is there an actual picture example of the
/416\ listed in the table (below) that
LC posted earlier? I don't know the history of these representations, if they're exact replications of the arsenal mark, or just a simple numbered triangle to represent the arsenal? Many of the more complex triangle arsenal markings, well, I wouldn't know which numbers would go in what order? Many are hard to even decipher the numbers, much less the order they go in.
I think I'll email the Chinese Defense Minister, or whatever his title is, and ask him to send us a detailed list and timeline of arsenal productions. thankyou1 I mean, it's not like they would say no, eh? chuckles1 :P

These charts follow a long and convoluted path. Some that were 'claimed' to have been seen, are in fact misrepresentations of standard marks. I know for a fact that /36\ looks so close to /136\ that I personally have confused them together before. The /416\ below may very well be one of those and the only true /416\ is what we've been talking about in this thread.
We are going to be cleaning up the charts soon and removing those not verified with photo evidence. If/when new ones are found, we will simply add them in. Better to have verified stamps than speculated ones in my book.

I wanted to put these in as an example because as you can see...Strong stamp, no light strike and clean. No tail either but if you look hard enough, maybe a tail could be seen :-\
Receiver cover scope mounts are a bane to my existence... but this 1 is an interesting piece for the collection.

Again a nice clean stamp, but depending on angle and light this 1 has a tiny bit of tail. I can see how this can be seen as a 4 but I'm still not sold. If it turns out to be /416\ instead of /016\ so be it. Heck... could be both ( kinda doubt 2 so similar but...) I would love to see 1 of the Kengs certificates but even then it could turn out to be someone's stateside opinion.
Keep up the healthy debate fellas,
Been wondering the same thing myself... Here's mine.

Nice! thumb1
I'm firmly in the camp of "That's a stupid way to make a 4, but it sure as heck is a 4!"
Welcome to the boards HH, we're glad to have you here!
Somebody with a KFS imported one needs to just spend the $50 and get the certificate from KFS that will list the actual arsenal number....and mystery solved :)

Alright... I'm in. Just placed an order for 016/416 S/N 180383**
Will see what the certificate says and let you know.

PLEASE UPDATE US WITH WHAT ALL IS ENTAILED ON THE 'CERTIFICATE'!!!
I have been dying for someone to do this. It may answer some questions. When I spoke to them about it, I was told it would come with the arsenal that it was built at, as well as the import date.
The questions about it are.... how will the arsenal be shown? Number form? Or actual name? If it comes back with the name of the arsenal, that is HUGE. If it comes back with the number....well that answers the 016/416 debate.
I have always had the impression talking with KFS, that they have info that we have looked for for many years. I have asked then about exactly what they have, but have never been given an answer :(

Looking at the sample certificate online, it says...
"This certificate acknowledges that the Poly Technologies, Inc. AKS-762 with serial number AB00-000-0000 was manufactured by State Arsenal 123 in Specific City, Specific Province, China. It was imported by Keng's Firearms Specialty, Inc. in Month of Year, and was sold on Month, Date, Year."
Should be a wealth of info for sure. If this plays out, I would highly recommend anyone with a Keng's import, regardless of factory, get the info. The certificate with the rifle is just too cool.
Says they will do it for all Poly Technologies Imported rifles. Two weeks for delivery.

Laugh! Fenceline, you're doing more to advance this than anybody else has! We're either too cheap (me), or don't have a poly/KFS gun to send in (me also, because I'm cheap!) If our research is right, this gun will come back with a '73 date. (And a /416\ or possibly 4160 if the /\ actually stands for a zero like some say).
It'll be a great data point for us! If we are right this is good validation, if we are wrong, we adapt the theory. Win both ways! thumb1

Interesting....I think ??? Can you give us a general gist of what is being described in these lists? :)
QuoteWe're either too cheap
Cheap nea1 Broke thumb1 besides, fity bucks for a printed piece of paper is expensive, thats like 200rds of x39 ammo, a third of a Mosin, lay-a-way on a Henry, a carton of smokes, 5 boxes of 9mm, 19 packages of Oreos, 2 Katy Perry cds and a bottle of lotion... Priorities, man, priorities rofl2 chuckles1
It's actually going to cost me $50 USD which is more like $70 Canadian haha. But for me knowing the history of the gun is worth it, plus it will add legit data for the research side of things which for me is just bonus.
I'll probably do the same thing for two Colt ARs I have that are police surplus. Just so much value added for me personally. Not even a resale thing.

Holy crap!
Tough to read. Would be good to scale it down into some sort of easy reference sheet.
Just got an update email saying my order has been shipped. I guess that means they found my rifle on file and there is actually something to report on the certificate haha. Now to wait for international shipping to do its part.

I have no idea if this is a comprehensive list that covers all of China's arsenal factories, or just China North's, China South's, or just a partial list that was all they could think of at the time? It doesn't have the Polytech arsenal 386, or many of the other arsenal codes, especailly the Jianshe /26\. I would revel in the fact that there is no 016 code and there

is the first list of actual arsenal factories in China, in Chinese, that I've seen. So it's a step in the right direction.
Personally, I believe it's a /416\.
ArmedHippie, most of the examples that you shared pics of,
to me had the "leg" and little doubt for me that they're /416\ codes. But hey, that's only my opinion. And in case you weren't aware, I had

I would like to know what the meaning of the suffix at the end of many lines on the second chart, that says: " After the dismount."

Yup... I'm more convinced through data now that it is indeed 416.

Factory 26 is listed as Factory 296:
296 Factory: Construction Industry (Group) Co., Ltd. (Chongqing)
Jianshe in Chinese means Construction

Interesting... Thanks for the translation. thumb1
No problem Sir.
A side note: 'One of 156' on the list means the factory was established as one of 156 major industrial projects aided by the Soviet Union according the Sino-Soviet Defense Technology Treaty in early 1950s (later it became Sino-Soviet Agreement on New Technologies for National Defense (1957)).

(1) yes, Factory 245 is one of the 156 projects
(2) 012 is military installation number. One installation may have several military factories with different factory codes.

012 is an airplane manufacturing plant (in Sha'an Xi province), it has many different factories and even has a military hospital:
http://www.zgjgrc.com/view.php?id=285
the 3rd paragraph mentions all the old military factories, schools, hospitals on post.

Naw, I think that's a pretty logical conclusion given some of the stuff we do know.
We know Nanjing (21st arsenal) moved to Chongqing in 1938.
We know Hanyang (1st arsenal) moved to Chongqing in 1940.
We know the 21st assimilated the entire 1st rifle factory shortly afterwards, with the 21st themselves only having made Hanyang rifles since 1939.
It seems that factory lines were at least semi-fluid and with the experience the Chinese had moving factories away from the Japanese front in WWII (and again while outmaneuvering KMT forces and consolidating the PLA's power after the war), different factories could find themselves wholly uprooted or under the control of different elements of leadership pretty easily.
I think we see this with the 1955 T53's with some early 1.3 mil carbines having a 296 stamp while the later 1955 dated 3 million series sported a 26 stamp. Both are thought to be factories in Chongqing, yet they were different lines, or at least different leadership controlling the same line.
Pretty much.... I still think situations like all the [] codes could be the same location.
They very well could be. Someone needs to get off their rears and get the ARSENAL COMPONENT CONFIGURATIONS done! :)
Then we could see the similarities as well as the differences across all the [] lines...
Lol... Find me some good clear pic listings. bat1
Clear arsenal pic.... Crappy rest, or Clear pics of whole gun... No arsenal or serial pic. Its hell I tell ya!

Thanks
pcke2000! I figured it was a translation shortcoming. This may not be known yet, but what are they talking about with all the "After the suspended/suspension" comments? Was there a particular year that these arsenals were "suspended" or shut down or combined with another arsenal? Or was it more of a natural progression of obsolete plants/arsenals that were not needed and were simply shut down or combined/merged with another arsenal?

My Certificate of Authenticity from Keng's Firearms Specialty Inc has just arrived regarding my 016/416 Arsenal stamped, PS stamped Type 56 SKS.
It says...
"This certificate acknowledges that the Poly Technologies, Inc. SKS with Serial Number 180383## was manufactured by State Arsenal 416 in Jing-AN, China. It was imported by Keng's Firearms Specialty, Inc. on October 13, 1987 and was sold on December 29, 1987."
So there it is.
And here is the close up of the Arsenal stamp...

Can you get a photo (or simply look at the poly stamps in http://sks-files.com/index.php?topic=2111.0 and let me know which one it is)? Would be nice to narrow the type of stamp to the import date. thumb1

Ya, but this SKS came out of the U.S. at some point. Unless you are getting at something else.
Imported by KFS, sold by KFS, and then likely brought across the border before the ITAR stupidity spooled up, and before our firearm laws really took a dump in the early 90s.
Ah... I was under the impression your gun was not US imported.

I knew it was a US import and then exported to Canada, but I'm still a bit perplexed that there's not more information on that stamp though. Now that I know this stamp was done in '87 I'll have to look up what the firearms import requirements were back then and see what gives.
Personally I'm quite glad I forked over the money for the certificate. It is a nice addition to the gun.
But that it is revealing some cool leads is even better. Nothing earth shattering, but still steps forward. Really happy about that. dance2

Sister rifle for sure. Same 18x serial, same KFS markings. Very cool thumb1 Less than 500 apart haha.
I really should take a closer look at my Albanian. Someone liberated that one from the US as well, but no obvious import mark from when it first landed state side. I probably just haven't seen it.
I'd bet dollars to donuts that Alby is going to have a TG import stamp under the barrel (likely covered up by the bayo & cleaning rod).
Something like:

I looked at mine after reading your post and it's marked just like yours. But after further inspection, if you look just forward of your Gas Block, on the under side of the barrel, it should have a nice stamp that reads:
SKS 7.62 CHINA. Very small, discreet stamp, like the Albanian TGI stamps,
forward of the Gas Block.
RM, if you need pics of that, let me know.
