It's so rare that I stumble across a great buy on a firearm but it did happen a couple of weeks ago. An older gentleman came into the shop, where I work as the gunsmith. He told me he had a couple of rifles he wanted to give me as "parts." He went on to explain that the rifles had been in his basement when it flooded and, now, they were "completely ruined." I followed him out to his car, he opened his trunk and the first thing I saw was a rust-covered SKS, still in the styrafoam box, it's sling still neatly rolled and tucked into its hole in the box and a very water damaged Navy Arms manual. He told me he had bought the rifle years ago. "Tell ya what," I said to the guy, "Just to keep the paperwork straight, let me give you $3.00 for it." So, I bought it for three bucks! Turned out to be an early, lettered SKS (K473-) with a blade bayonet and non-numbered, Arctic birch stock. While the outside was rough, the inside was perfect and still loaded with cosmoline. Seriously, I don't think he ever shot it. Anyway, here are some before and after photos. And, yes, it shoots great!

1776 will commence again if you try to take our firearms... It doesn't matter how many Lenins you get out on the street begging for them to be taken.

Im new to SKS's... Somebody on this sight said the rail on the left side of the receiver was an "M88" scope mount, probably added by Navy Arms.

Nice get. And great job making a rifle out of it once again.

I will gladly give you ten times...NO...twenty times what you paid for it. :)

HAHAHA!!! That's how I justified it to my wife! I told her I could sell the bayonet for five or six bucks and make a profit!  :))

Spongemoney wins... I've been waiting for this one. The guy wanted to give it to me for free. I gave him $3 more than what he was asking. And, yeah, I sleep great! thumb1

Thanks, Power Surge. I'm giving Sponge Monkey the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he didn't read my original post that carefully.

Ha! Okay, seriously, all I had on me was five, one dollar bills and I really wanted a Diet Coke later, so....

Now, other than hearing about a firearm being handed down from a family member for free, I think this was the best "deal" I've heard of!  :o  Talk about being in the right place at the right time! You shoulda bought a couple lottery tickets with those other two dollars and just drank some water! It was definitely your lucky day!

I was wondering what the splotchy marks onthe bluing was in your other thread. Now I know. I guess he gave you the sling, ruined-but-matching SN'd box, Owner's Manual, and who knows what else? Pretty darn cool!

Okay, just out of curiousity, what was the "other" gun that he gave you? AK-47? Chinese RPK? Some of that Euro-trash like a Valmet?  chuckles1  You lucky dog!  clap1 clap1

He gave that (For free) to a buddy of mine who coaches a 4H target shooting team. It cleaned up well, though most of the exterior bluing is gone, and is a tack-driving rifle.
