My wood shall stay cosmos'd! It smells good that way.  rofl

As a self-affirmed rifle-licker myself (I've always taken this term to mean "one who licks his rifles instead of shoots them"), the big downside I see is the fact that the cosmo on a stock tends to slough off at the most inopportune times.  You can't shoot it because the heat will melt the stuff and it will come off and get you & your clothes filthy.  You can't have it out at the range on a sunny day because the sun will melt the stuff and it will come off and get you & your car/shooting bench filthy.  You can't lay it down most places in your house because movement will melt the stuff and it will come off and get you and your carpet/furniture/dining room table filthy.

Even with stocks that I've 'cleaned' with the trash bag/dashboard method, the stuff still tends to ooze out in small amounts over time especially during temperature fluctuations and I find I have to wash my hands after handling more than a couple because I can feel that greasy layer on my fingertips.  I will admit that the stuff works well though!  thumb1

I usually cook it out now by gentle heating in a 180F oven (while my wife is away). Even after a dozen cycles of heating and wiping there is still plenty of Cosmoline left in the stock. I mean, wood is a bundle of hollow fibers so once you've applied something to it you are never going to leach 100% of it out.  At least it doesn't bleed out easily on a warm day or after firing a few rounds (well, maybe the handguard will still bleed a bit).

Thats one thing I always found kind of interesting,  oil on the stock or oil soaked wood in this instance lasts and lasts, yet oil soaked wood used for crib blocks and get exposed to alot of petroleum oils and grease gets soft, breaks down, falls apart and starts to deteriorate rather quickly.

I love the smell of Cosmo  on a warm sunny day. It smells of a good bargain and years of enjoyment. ;)
