I finally had the cosmo caked Yugo cleaned and took it out in the snow this weekend for some cold weather fun. It works splendidly. Here it is in all its freshly cleaned glory.

Definitely a beaut Shotz!  thumb1  How do you find shooting a Yugo vs. another variant w/o the G/L?  Some guys love them and some guys wind up hating them.  Then there are other guys like me that only have time to look at our rifles and never actually shoot them!  cry2

Shotz90s

Never shoot them? What does that even mean LOL. I don't mind the G/L personally. At least it didn't make much difference in how it shoots vs. the 2 chinese that I have. I will say its not quite as accurate as those 2 are which did surprise me. Regardless, I still love it and don't regret getting it.

I had to double take at the trigger guard. I think a drunk assembly line tech screwed you out of an all matching rifle by one digit. Beautiful Yugo.  Great wear to it.

Thanks! Yeah I wasn't real happy about it but I'll forgive them. I like it as its screwed up self and you're right, he was probably loaded. If anyone ever sees that trigger guard, I'll trade w/ them haha.

fenceline

I have an Enfield like that.  All matching except the bolt handle, which has the last two digits reversed.  It is a refurb though, so I'm sure the tech just stamped in the wrong order haha.

Have yo noticed those ports in the gl make it louder from the shooters position compared to a standard sks?

Nice Yugoslavian!  thumb1 Cosmoline soaked elm keeps the moisture from the snow out  :)

I've seen quite a few examples of different rifles -- even German Mausers Blicero  :o -- with single digit mismatched parts.

It didn't seem any louder to me. Of course it could have been excitement blocking any extra noise but I don't think so.

Thanks Phos. It got a nice little rub down for good measure when I got home just in case it was moistened LOL. I wonder what sort of refreshments they had for lunch?

I like the color of the wood. The 59/66 looks tough and rugged. Nice going great catch

CARBINE

Nice one man, looks to be in great shape, I think the trigger mismatch is neat... don't see that everyday!!
Congrats.

Thanks. I was surprised at how nice it was. I was lucky at something finally. The color of the wood is perfect! I had contemplated selling it but I've fallen for it and am just holding tight on the other thing I wanted to do.

I think a cosmo soaked stock makes the best finish.   ;)

Can Phos add any scientific input to the pros/cons of this?

It's just another type of oil "finish" so it's hydrophobic, in other words, repels moisture.  It'll help keep water off from the outside, and help retain the normal 7-15% moisture found in "dry" wood inside. It's petroleum derived so it's somewhat similar to mineral oil, just not as highly refined and bleached and therefore has the brownish amber color.  Ballistol is a secret formula but I think that was coal oil derived so it should have some very similar chemicals in it.  Cosmoline is non-hardening, unlike the plant oils, tung and linseed, so it can always be bled out by heat or leached out by dissolving it with mineral spirits or something similar. However, once Cosmoline, or Tectyl 502C like the Yugoslavians use, is applied to a stock, you'll never get 100% of it out of the wood  :)

Will it have any negative effects on the wood over time?

I can't see much in the way of negatives. The oil can allow dirt to stick and get rubbed in but not a big problem for most of us who aren't on battlefields but going to the range or out in the woods and can clean our firearms after quite easily.   It also has the likely benefit of inhibiting fungal/bacterial growth on the wood, both because the hydrocarbons are not good growth substrates for microbes and also because they prevent absorption of water which is the key issue in microbial destruction of wood; without water, microbes cannot grow.
