Well I hope she cleans up nicely enough to be a shooter...I would almost feel satisfied just having one hangin on the wall to gawk at....but I am sure I would feel your frustration as I would wanna go to town with one of those someday. My shoulder be damned, an SA 54r would be a treat.

I got her cleaned up and she's looking nice :)

Tomorrow is range day. We'll see how she does! Fingers crossed.

Dont break the handguard.    <<<<------  nevermind.  Was thinking of Blicero

1776 will commence again if you try to take our firearms... It doesn't matter how many Lenins you get out on the street begging for them to be taken.

Where's he been anyway? Figured he'd be all over this post lol.

School is starting soon....  He has many seminars to attend learning how to give special treatment to minorities.

Range Report!

Ok, I gotta say I'm pretty happy with the SVT40. The previous owner said he had to use either gas setting 1.5 or 1.7 for proper operation. I tried 1.5 and no ejection. Went to 1.7, and good ejection. After inspecting the gas valve and having to use 1.7 (the highest setting) for proper ejection, I am pretty sure that the inside of the valve and hole ports are probably corroded up. I am going to pull the valve and check all the ports. But she shot fine on 1.7.

It's a pretty fun rifle to shoot. It feels like an SKS with more kick. But the recoil is almost straight back and very manageable. No muzzle rise. Definitely was getting some looks from the AR guys when she went bang, lol.

Accuracy wise, pretty much on par with an of my SKSs. I shot on the 50 yard range today. Horizontal aim was right on. Vertical was low about 8 inches. I went to adjust the sight post with my SKS tool....but the hole in the SVT hood is smaller. I played with rear sight settings for now to get on target. The 400 meter setting got me dead center. Groups were pretty good for my first time out with her.

On the bench...

5 and 10 round groups...

The SVT40 has a fluted chamber to help reduce pressures and ripping case heads off...this pic shows the grooves pretty well...

Justin Hell

Nice groups and the fluted chamber is something I had never heard of....there is a jelly spill in Montana!

Nice man....   Looks like fun.  Save some ammo for when I'm in town.   :P

I'm going to try the yugo gas valve fix on her, and if that works then I'll order the stainless replacement valve.

Same trick work on svt?

I'll find out, lol.  It's just a test really. The gas system was really weak on 1.7, and 1.7 is max and should have been really hard. After pulling the gun apart to clean afterwards, there was a lot of carbon in front of the gas piston, telling me a lot of gas is escaping instead of being used as pressure. The fit is very loose between the gas piston and the cup. They are the original 74 year old serialed parts after all, lol. There is a groove in the piston, so I used a coil off a spring and made a "piston ring" to seal it better and we'll see how it does. If the gas system works like it should, I'll order up the stainless replacement set and use those instead.

I also shaved down my SKS sight tool so it fits in the hole in the SVT sight hood, so now I can adjust vertical aim. Going to take the SVT and the Type 63 I got from xxxjoe tomorrow and hit the 100 yard range :)

Loose}{Cannon

Cool...  Sounds like you got it all ready to blast!

Gotta say...I'm pretty impressed with this rifle. I managed some 3" groups at 100 yards open sights. And definitely draws a crowd. Not bad for a 74 year old rifle! :)

Dang it Power, that's some good shooting!

Phosphorus32

Nice shooting! Looks like you have the sights adjusted well. What ammo were you shooting?

At 1.7 I'm amazed you didn't rip some heads or crack a wrist. They are finicky and somewhat fragile beasts despite their titanic appearance, be mindful of that.
Nice rifle, congrats!
