Cleaned up surplus stripper clips

I don't have a ton of knowledge to share just yet, but I thought I'd put this out for anyone interested.

I'd heard that most of the repo stripper clips can be problematic and I should try to find surplus originals. I got some on eBay and when I opened them up, I thought I'd made a mistake. They were rusty and gross but for $10 for the set, I figured I'd give cleaning them up a try. Haven't used them yet, but they look much better.

I rinsed them with Dawn, then boiled them in hot water for about thirty minutes two times. Took them out and rubbed them down with 0000 steel wool then put a couple drops of CLP on each side and rubbed them down with a blue shop towel.

Overall, I think they came out well and I'm much less nervous about putting them in my rifle.

Cleaned up nicely, did you coat them with some oil?

Yes to the oil. I put a moderate coat on when I was polishing them and buffed until just a small trace remained.

Another good way to remove rust on metal is to get some detergent motor oil (conventional, not synthetic) and soak the parts in that and the rust flakes off. I usually just go to Walmart and get their standard W30. Did a complete SKS action with it once and it worked wonders. The oil also penetrates the metal and gives the that preventative measure. 2 steps in one more or less.

I work in automotive and I suspect a good portion of the stuff in the shop could have been used on this project. I just went with what I had on hand at home.

Turned out nifty!  It's always nice to see people salvage corroded parts that 90% of everyone would simply throw away.

Yea those turned out nice : )  I have some new strippers with what seems like a thin coat of cosmoling on them and was wondering if I leave the coat on them and load em or clean the coat off ? Anyone ever had these types of stripper clips and what would you do ? Thanks and Thanks Jeonsah for reminding me

Assuming it's actually cosmoline, I'd clran it off. I'd be worried about it getting in the action. Very thin light coat of oil to protect.

Got to try these out today. 5 of them worked flawless to near near flawless. I separated them out and will be trying to fix the others. If not, they're cheap and I'll get another lot and clean them too lol

Try and find Yugo surplus stripper clips, those are the best of what is commonly available. The aftermarket Chinese (NCStar) are junk. Some of the older surplus Chinese clips are okay, the ones that are number stamped like 31/(31), 311, etc.
