I think he meant it was "the kicker" because since he had just bought one, he did not wind up buying the (possibly nicer and more valuable) gunshow one (or at least that's the way I read it). 

No sense pouring salt on the wound pcke!

The moral of the story is if you lay hands on a '49 with the correct stock for under $1000 (US or CAD), you buy it.

I have always wondered how it was determined that a cover has been scrubbed and stamped just by looking at the difference in the font. I would think that without the stock on and cover in place, taking a straight edge would be able to determine if metal was removed. I remember pictures that running-man posted showing 2 sets of serial numbers(one very faint), which is an conclusive indication. Also the way it sits in the receiver, should also be an indication. Also, I forgot to welcome a fellow Canadian to this site. Enjoy the ride.

The main point is that the fonts should be the same but they are different. I’m not referring to the size (e.g. 16 point) but rather the style (font).

Try this - have both parts standing straight up(no angle shots). Take one picture of each at the same distance. Also take a picture of what I posted in previous post, to see if metal has been removed.

Well those pics pushed me towards the numbers being original  If you could get the white gunk out of the numbers (brass or nylon brush and solvent), and take pictures straight on in natural light (no flash, no overhead lights or direct glaring sun), that’d be perfect.

The cover font looks the same as the font on the receiver. Minor variation in the  cover "E" looks like the result of the strike and not a difference in the stamp.

But the ferrule top pin suggests that the rifle was originally outfitted with a blade bayonet, as already noted above.
