A little help with this Please.  Like I need another SKS and I'm just waiting for my wife to serve me divorce papers...  bat1,  My friend just aquired 2 59/66 Yugos and he said he got them at a good price.  He want's to sell one and is giving me first crack at one.  My question Please,  One of the Grenade launchers has hole's, the other doesn't. Both are in "what I would call very good shape" no dings or scratches.  Bores are good and I could get one for $500.00.  Thoughts on this please Great Gurus! Thanks!  Dave.

In the yugo SKS ,the earliest models has holes in the grenade launcher . In the latter models they no longer ported the launcher like that. There are also slight differences in the base of the M59/66 launcher as well. One base is at a 90o angle and the other base is about 45o

Ported vs. non-ported is a design change in Yugos.

The last ported Yugo GL on a gun with a log book is from I3162xx from 9/28/1972.
The first non-ported Yugo GL seen with a log book is J3445xx from 4/30/1973.
The last ported Yugo GL ever seen (no log book) was on a J series gun from ~1973.  Highly unlikely that they would retrofit a non-ported gun with a ported GL at refurb, so I suspect this is one of the last guns that got a ported GL off the line.

So the transition happened sometime around there, probably part way into the J series '73 guns.

The newer tritium vs older phosphor sights appears to have changed a bit earlier than the GL, in ~1971.

Info is on the serial data board here: https://sks-files.com/index.php?topic=1489.0 (Unfortunately that board, like all our serial data boards, is only visible to riflemen or above.)

Thanks all,  I guess it really doesn't matter much.  I'll pick one.  :). Both in very nice shape.

This website and it's members are awesome! I just learned more about the Yugoslavian SKS, and you have to post pictures when you get it!

Of course the other option is that it is a CA legal Yugo and has a Tapco muzzle brake on it instead, but we have no pics so who knows, LOL. dance2 dance2
My Avatar is a pic of the real "Ghost" SKS in honor of xxxsks(joe). It is a pic of a fully decked out SKS in Capco hunter's kit. This was mine, the only other pic I had ever seen of one was Joe's.

Good point GG!  Could be a California legal mod to replace the GL with a muzzle brake.  Could also be a G16 variant (https://sks-files.com/index.php?topic=3340.msg37664#msg37664)

I have nothing to add to the discussion.

But I will say that you have a very good friend.

It looks like the normal "standard" one that comes on the Yugo.  They look identical except one with holes!  I called him and he's picking the one HE wants first.  I really don't care, they were both in very nice shape!  I'll know tomorrow which one.  I'll post  :)

I belong to a gun club with a really great bunch of guys, many of them retired military like me,  and many of these guys buy, sell, trade all the time.  We have a fella who owns over 50 Garands!  :o  He's 80 years old, his last hobby was collecting "rolling blocks". He had over 100 of them, sold them all to a collector in Minnesota who flew them all back "privately and I'm in NJ.  You never know what your gonna find or talk about with some of these guys.  Some will buy a gun, shoot it, get bored with it and sell it a week later.  We have 8 active FFL's in the group so transfers are somewhat easy for me even though I'm here in hell...
