So I came across this SKS and grabbed it. It is an out of state deal , but long story short its all matching , but has no SN on the mag. I don't have it in my hands yet, but will post a picture of the mag asap. The owner told me it has not been altered , so i took a chance. Is it possible that it came with a sterile mag?  I don't believe the numbers have been scrubbed. any input is much appreciated.
Thanks Nick

My guess is that the magazine is a replacement, because "stamped and matching" is the standard for magazines on original configuration guns.

One possibility is that a previous owner removed the original mag and replaced it with a high-capcity, aftermarket duckbill magazine and then lost or misplaced the original magazine when he sold it. This is a fairly common occurrence.

Another possibility is that it was replace prior to export-- as un-stamped parts are not uncommon on the pre-ban guns.

Nice catch.

To the left of the triangle 4 on the stock, looks like a character that's been "circled" by hand.
What is that?

Not seeing anything remotely looking like a circled character on my 27" monitor to the left of the triangle 4. Can you circle the area you are referring to?

Are you are referring to the squared off area with what looks like a vertical facing uzi or something similar in it? To me it looks like a coincidence of scratches around maybe some trench art?  But it is mighty small for trench art. :o

Nope. Not smart enough.

Yessir. That's exactly what I'm seeing. (although I didn't see the Uzi until you said that.... clap1)

Looks real nice. I wish your mag matched for you.

The stock "circle" looks like stock dings etc... to me.

Most folks will prefer an unmarked part over that of a mismatched numbered part.  But it still hurts the value some, as it will never be completely matching.

As for value?  I would consider it as a $350-450 specimen.

without mag matching its still a good looking sks Nick. probably just a replacement (as has been said).  thumb1 ------> so what did you pay?  :o

Cool find, regardless of the magazine! It's the highest serial number recorded for an 0296 M21  thumb1
