Hello all,
I'm looking into a few different options to carry ammunition. I like the tried and true approach (Chinese chest rig, Russian belt pouches, etc) but also like some of the newer offerings that allow me to store ammunition on my rifle without looking too tacticool (Strike Hard Gear SKS Rifle Ammo Pouch).

Does anyone have any experience (good, bad, or otherwise) with carrying stripper-clipped ammunition?

the Chinese (military surplus, Vietnam era) chest rigs are designed for the stripper clips (about 200 rounds), cheap enough on eBay (around $15).  thumb1

Either the Chicom chest rig, or the Russian belt pouches.
Chest rigs hold more, but the pouches are easier to access if you're in a rush.

if you dont want to look like the crazy guy wearing the chest rig at the range, tie the ends together, shorten the sholderstaps a bit and just carry it from them

Yeah, you read my mind. I love the look and functionality of them, but I don't need to go full-on Burt Gummer. Good call!

Leave the gun, take the cannoli.

I said I was an addict........I didn't say I had a problem

For a trip to a range, ammo rides in an ammo can or the range bag.

For desert shooting, I'll "Burt" the hell out of it.

I carry ammo for range trips in an East German grenade pouch.  3 compartments, nice secure clasps, holds my strippers pretty snugly with minimal stray round issues.  I can carry 90 rounds very easily and could stuff 100-120 rounds in there if I *really* had to.  They once could be had for ~$3 a piece, but they are getting more and more scarce anymore.

I have 8 or 10 of them packed with M67 that I have floating around here and there: closet of the RV, under the seat in the truck, car, farm truck, a few in my ubiquitous bag of necessities that's ready to go in a moment's notice...

i have to say with the chest rigs, about 20% of the time you end up with 9 on the stripper and 1 loose in the pouch

Those pouches look pretty perfect. I have an East German e-tool that rides in a carrier in the same pattern. (Maybe I'll go HALF Burt Gummer.)

I think East German web gear doesn't get the credit it deserves. I'll do a little shopping around and see what I can find.

I like the yugo leather pouches best. I have some that are excess, need to be soaked in ballistol and shaped a bit.

As an update, I bought a Strike Hard Gear SKS pouch. It solves for my onboard carrying needs.
I'm leaning towards the East German pouches for belt carrying though.

First impression: the shock cord to attach it to the stock is garbage, as a few other reviewers have said. It broke as I was cinching it tight. I replaced it with paracord, which is much more secure.

Besides that, everything looks good. Placing it took all of one minute, and it laces up like a shoe. I ran one end of the lace through the sling swivel to secure it. It holds three loaded stripper clips snugly, and has two closures to keep them from popping out.

I'm heading out to the range next week, so if there are any updates I'll let you all know.

When going to the range or outdoors to shoot, I carry my ammo in ammo cans.  The ammo is already preloaded in detachable mags or on stripper clips.  I also keep some preloaded detachable mags and loaded stripper clips in east germain raintree pouches that hold a lot of ammo.
