AK magazine followers

I don't own an AK but have a few mags laying around that I got with my AK mag SKS's.  I was looking at the followers and notices that some followers have a "lump" in the shape of a cartridge and some just have a "lump".  The ones with just the "lump" don't seem to work that well in my SKS's so I'm wondering what gives?  Did I get cheap mags?  I'd post a pic but...you know....
