I have a Russian stock that would be lovely except it is hazy and orange peelish...I would like to get it as clear and deep as I see many Russian stocks...

The potential is there, but it looks like during a refurb...they added shellac, or possibly sprayed it? Perhaps it just was rushed, it just looks less than it can be...and it is for my 49, with several parts that match the albeit force matched stock from a donor early 50....so I don't want to screw it up. :)

I have never worked with shellac, and rather than screw it up, I figured someone out there might help me not do the wrong thing.

I have a big ol container of denatured alcohol, and a tiny container of Bull's Eye clear that I would just as soon not mess with. I gather that the alcohol should...melt...the shellac into being wet again, which should allow for smoothing it...right?  Any handling tips and or curing info would be helpful too.

Or would I be better off just trying some 0000 steel wool and hope to not remove too much to get some semblance of luster back to the finish?
Buffing with a microfiber cloth?

Greasemonkey

Humidity can affect shellac during application..and could have caused the haze or foggyness if absorbed by the shellac during curing. Also, if moisture gets trapped under shellac it could cause the same thing.

You might be able to wet sand it with like 1500/ 2000 grit autobody sandpaper for the shine you desire and then a nice wax to help seal it... But Ive never tried it ???

So....dont blame me :P if you..........do it and it ends bad rofl
I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse......

I said I was an addict........I didn't say I had a problem
