Picked up this cover from a seller in Canada for my project...just was wondering if this serial is closer to a 49 in the big list....or something later??

I'll check when I get home Pat. E spans both '49 and '50 from what i remember with maybe 'EB' being a possible transition point. No idea about the Б though. I'll look.

Ok Pat, check this out:

EБ427, I believe this gun to be a transitional 1950, *not* a '49, the receiver cover is a replacement with a restamped number.  The font is wrong, the linespacing is wrong etc.:

EБ485, I believe this gun is also a '50 (based on the transitional '50 features of the gun, I don't have a S/N off the receiver cover unfortunately):

Your EБ453 helps tie them together and makes the '50 an easier sell (to me at least).  Easier to believe that all three are from transitional '50s than all three from '49s with one replacement cover being a lucky match from another donor '49 and the other two mismatched covers coming from donor transitional '50s.  That's way too coincidental for my liking.

My two examples are still listed as "uncertain" as far as the "actual year" field is concerned in the spreadsheet.  Maybe one day we can put them to rest but for now there are still too many assumptions to say for certain one way or another.  thumb1

As an aside, I have the following prefix info in the database:

EM: 1949, 3 ea. confirmed (with spike bayo)
ЖБ: 1949, 1 ea. confirmed (with spike bayo)

ЕЮ: 1949?, 1 ea. unconfirmed, could be a transitional '50 with a replacement '49 cover.
EM: 1950?, 1 ea. unconfirmed, could be a '49 with a replacement transitional '50 cover. (likely considering the '49 EM's noted above)
EБ: 1950?, 2 ea. (+ 1 receiver cover) unconfirmed, could be 2 '49s with 2 replacement transitional '50 covers.

Not much to go by unfortunately.

Interesting.....he had another 50 cover that was Eb (sorry...on my tablet) but it sold....so I asked for pictures of it. I am getting a 90 degree block and loop cover latch from him as well.  Kills me to think of what these rifles look like when he parts em' out....but I get it.
P.S.  I found the number, but no picture yet...Eb278

Running Man,    any serial number documentation out there on prefixes and manufacturing year?  where the "EB" the last 49's or first 50's ?

Hi Reddragon, sorry I've been meaning to reply to this post for a while now.

There are precious few '49 and '50 prefixes in the database but here's what I've observed:

I mistakenly remembered "EB" being the S/N but it appears I had EB and EБ confused together.  Before Pat posted his cover I had thought that the EБs might have been the transition block, but I no longer think so.  Here's how they break down:

EБ427 is a heavy refurb with a 1949 receiver cover (shown above).
EБ485 is a heavy refurb with a 1950 receiver cover (shown above).
Both have 90° gas blocks, early hoop takedown levers, square ear solid bayo lugs, and early tall receivers.

Add in Pat's heavy refurb EБ453 cover as a transitional '50 and I'd say the EБ's were '50s built guns.

I have a single EB gun in the database: EB538 with a transitional '50 receiver cover, a light refurb, 90° gas block, square ear solid bayo lug, and early tall receiver.  Other than the Б looking like a B, it is in it's own league...

Prefixes I have with 90° gas blocks are (these could be '49s or transitional '50s):
АВ, АГ, АИ, АМ, АЮ, ВО, ГР, ЕБ, ЕВ, ЕМ, ЕЮ, ЖБ, ЖН, ЖУ, МВ, МЕ, НМ, ОВ, ОП, ОЯ, РГ, РЖ, РМ, РН, РЯ, & ЮП.
