Recently scored this sweet Vietnam bring back Chinese chest rig and ammo. All the bullets are factory 31/dated 1966, and on factory 31 stripper clips. Writing on the back is faded and probably not legible, but I am curious if anyone knows what the three characters mean at the top of the flaps.

Purchased separately but they go great together, and look even better next to my 11 mil bring back! Anyway, just wanted to share... enjoy!!

Now *that* is wicked cool.
I bet pcke would be able to translate those characters.
What's the providence/story on the ammo and strippers?  Very interesting!

ARMY NAM VET, SO PROUD!

Ammo with stripper clips were found on Gunbroker, and not represented as bring-back. It wasn't even described as Chinese but rather had the date "1966" in the auction title which caught my eye. I asked what the story was and the seller said a local Vietnam Vet brought them in (seller was a local gun shop owner in another state) and that was it. So I asked if they were brought back and he said yeah, but without documentation he kept that info out of the auction description. Based on the date and patina I'd say they are spot on and have no reason to think otherwise. I hope the clips are vintage too, but no real way to tell. They have some speckling and handling marks on them, and the seller said they were together with the bullets when he brought them in. Same factory so the optimist in me believes they and the story are legit :)

That is very cool. Sure looks like a likely bringback item. Nice find!  thumb1

pcke2000

the three big characters on top are most likely someone's ( a Chinese ) name:
代: dai;  承:cheng; 志:zhi

'Dai' is last name, which is common in China, but not common in Vietnam; 'Cheng-Zhi' is first name, which means 'to inherit ideal/ambition'.

pcke2000

1st line in 2nd last picture looks like 'Discipline Team (literal translation, it's similar to MP but can be formed in either regular Army or militia in order to monitor and maintain military personnel's discipline) 2nd squad/team'

2nd line is too faint to read.

pcke2000

I am still trying to figure out what the characters in the last picture mean. The 2nd and 3rd characters surly mean 'for something/someone use only' though.

Interesting...

I wonder if it could have been a used hand-me-down for the NVA effort. Otherwise it would be interesting to know how it got here, as not a lot of domestically used Chinese military gear makes it out. The chest rig was represented as Vietnam bring-back from an eBay seller in Washington State. It only cost me $20 so either way I'm happy to have it.

Thank you very much for the translation information thankyou1

The markings are cool.   thumb1     Not sure how anyone could tell it was 'brought back', because there is a metric crap-ton of these chest rigs floating around that were imported.

Thanks captain bring down... just kidding :)) There was indeed a lot of surplus imported and sold over the last 30 years. But most would be unused or lightly used at worst, and a majority of that produced specifically for the commercial market (which would have had as little markings as possible). Would be nice if I received it directly from the fella (or importer if that's the case) that brought it in to know for sure.

Oh well. It is what it is... and what it is, is pretty damn cool!

Thanks again pcke2000.

Sorry...  not trying to throw a turd in the punch-bowl.  If I ever seen one that could have been brought back, this one plays the part.

I am NO expert on chest rigs by any means, but that one definitely looks different to me than the average surplus ones I have noticed.

But, one observation I can see.... I highly doubt the writing is personalized in any way.... the stitching over the writing is still tan, so the writing was printed before the rig was stitched together.

pcke2000

the Chinese characters were written on the rig, not printed.

What makes you say that?

gregsthe1

Characters and writing on back are definitely done in ink. Ink will fade on cloth strands of thread before it will fade from canvas.

That rig is most definitely different than what 1 will usually find. Nice score  thumb1 Really dig seeing the lil bit larger font (31) stamped stripper. Seen quite a few of the smaller font 31's but cant recall seeing the larger circled 1.
