I recently picked up a 56 letter gun that was advertised as a non-refurb.
There are no refurb marks and has original blueing on the gun but it has a black bayonet.
i have heard that some 56-58 models used left over black bayo's from the refurb arsenal.
Does anyone know if this is true ?

Nice sks for certain.  I think the verdict is still out on exactly what the black bayos are all about, but they are found seemingly only on "reworked" carbines.  Its not something you see every day and I think they look fantastic.

Food for thought...   49 spikers were black. May it be these black blades were installed on 50s when they first went to the blade and were at some point removed for uniformity/service, then later used up on reworks?

That is a very nice gun but it is a refurb, I do not believe the black bayo idea you talk about is accurate, that is usually a tell tale sign it has been through  refurbishment.   Congrats if you decide to buy it, I love when they come with all the goodies....and I have a soft spot for the letter series!

I've read through the black bayo hypothesis and I must say there is not much data backing it up at all.  It's a pretty good stretch to make a claim that they were built early but then never used until the original builds of late guns happened.  I find it much more common to see the golden tinted bayos on 'as-issued' '56-'58 guns.  I've been freshening up the Russian S/N database for the past few weeks and still have several hundred guns to catalogue, but once it's done maybe I can toss out hard data to see what's most plausible...

Irregardless, that's a nice gun OP.  I'd be proud to have that one in my collection, regardless of the refurb.

I actually prefer the looks of the black bayo, makes it look mean.

thanks for the info.
i'm still happy with my purchase,56 letter gun in excellent condition for $260.
it shoots great and has the smoothest trigger out of my 3 sks's.

i almost picked up a laminate 57 letter gun today but went for the cheaper 91/30 on the shelf.  $320 vs $149
