Testing out the k98b and some other WW2 vets

Brought a few rifles to the range today. Check it out.

I bought some Greek surplus 30.06 so I gave it a whirl in a Springfield m1. The Garand had been zeroed with Korean stuff so it needed some tweaking. This Greek stuff is decent enough. For the money I'd rather have the Korean ammo though.



Next up I spent some time with the PU. Dumped a box of old surplus junk toward the orange. The ammo may be cheap & corrosive but it's actually pretty good stuff.



And here's the reason why I woke up at 6 to get to the range by 8: To test drive the K98b, built by your local friendly denizen of the Weimar Republic and rebuilt later by Hans your neighborhood Nazi JP Sauer factory worker. I figured it would be a foot high so I started 2 shots with a 6 o'clock hold. Seemed to shoot point of aim so I gave the target more of the front sight. Once I found the sweet spot, I gave the sight a hair of a tap and managed to keep it in the paint. Smooth & stout, this gun is a shooter! Love it.

Nice!  Was the Greek surplus the HXP available at CMP?  My shipment had stamps mostly from the 70's, but I pulled a bunch of corroded rounds from the 50's out of there too.  Is the Korean surplus still available anywhere that you know of?

Holy Cow, I love these old rifles! I remember the old timers in my family talking about how the Germans could make you scratch for cover at 500-600 yards with the K98!

I hate to admit this but I passed one up at our local gun shop about a month ago, $800 and in really good condition. But I don't know if that was a fair price.

I've been known to revile Mosin Nagants...maybe ad nauseam. But I'll never say they can't hit what they're looking at. The PU scopes are pretty damn fun to use, I love the German-style crosshairs.

Blicero I can identify with that! But from what I'm seeing you're doing danged good with those old warhorses. I've never shot a K98 or Mosin but I owned a Garand, I know what those old soldiers are capable of. Is the stock on your M1 refinished, it looks good?

I hate to say it, but the Garand was as FAR superior weapon of its day compared to any within its class.

Oh, come on, don't dis the Mosins that bad. There is a very easy fix for any accuracy issue with a Mosin, buy a FINNISH. Chamber up some yellow tip heavyball and give it a go.  I've got an M39 Finn. that will hang with a Swiss K31.

Heck no that Garand isn't refinished. It's just that pristine. All of the stock cartouches are crispier than fried bacon.

And...yeah...for as much as I flip my wig over some German stuff, the Garand was the superior service gun at the time. It does have its downfalls, but no country was better armed.
The g43 would've given Garand a run for its money if it came out 7 years earlier. Those damn Nazis were just so married to their archaic 5-round bolt guns that by the time they realized they needed automatic service rifles, their necks were being stepped on. The finish on & fragility of g43s reflect that. Still awesome guns though.
