I recently got a paratrooper, /26\ 3 million serial with a spike bayonet.  Bubba cut the stock to fit the bayonet.... :-[...bad Bubba.  I am a weekend woodworker and thought I could fill in the stock and re-cut the blade groove if I only had some Chu wood.  At the store where everything is $1, I bought some paint brushes with Chu handles.  Amber shellac on the brush handle and it was a perfect match...but too small for the groove.  Then I was in a big box home improvement store this past weekend and something caught my eye.  They had samples of pre-finished hardwood flooring labeled as maple that was clearly Chu.  I got a 4" x 14" sample for $4 and took it home.  Perfect match...so far.  I milled out the slot in the stock, cut a piece of flooring to fit and it is in glue and clamps now.  I will post pics when it is finished!

They swore, if we gave them our weapons, that the wars of the tribes would cease.

I have a harbor freight cross slide vise mounted on my drill press.  I chuck a router bit in the drill press and clamp the stock in the vise.  A few cranks of the handle and its done!  I milled out the Bubba slot in this manner and it worked very well.

I thought about using my table saw with some stops set up to reproduce the slot and I may once I inspect the slot on my other blade bayonet stocks.  I guess I could also use my radial arm saw....Good question L-C

Here are the pics of the complete un-Bubba.  It turned out fairly well.  She shellac is still a little too new but some steel wool will take care of it.

First pic is the donor wood glued in place and sanded to match the stock contours:

2nd pic is the cut and shellac job:

3rd is completed:

Thanks guys!  I made the slot with my 8 1/4" radial arm saw.  Easy peasy lemon squeezy!
