I clicked on the the picture of the stock, enlarged and just noticed that the second 5 was stamped over with what looks like a different size and style stamp. Also, I checked my early 50 stock that has been sanded and refinished and there is no similar stamp on it.

I removed the butt plate to see if there were any markings. I found something very interesting - the trapdoor. It was something that I have not seen before. I have used my early 50 for comparison.

Thank you for sharing, this is something new now that I will be aware down the road.

I just found out that there was one other transition on this rifle compared to later designs. Rear sling mount.

Sheesh, jstin, how many 1949s have passed through your hands. I've never even seen one in real life.
