Picked this one up yesterday for <300, private party. 1956? (Long barrel lug), metal is immaculate.
*The phenolic (mebbe fiberglass) stock - fits to a 't', has a perfect seam, and doesn't appear to be one of the cheapo, Ebay knock-offs.
What sez ye? Apols 4 upside-down pics!  :P

WOW, that's about the nicest 6 digit /26\ I've seen, and at that price you got a steal. That would be an early '57 BTW.

And from what I understand the mesh look in the stock is from being stored in burlap or the like at some point in time. I could be wrong though, but that is my understanding.
My Avatar is a pic of the real "Ghost" SKS in honor of xxxsks(joe). It is a pic of a fully decked out SKS in Capco hunter's kit. This was mine, the only other pic I had ever seen of one was Joe's.

"early '57", that works for me! So, the "jungle" stock is legit? Fellow that sold it to me said he was gonna  buy some wood furniture and swap it out, but he never got around to it.

Great price! One of the imports direct from China so likely refurbished (that bolt carrier finish definitely looks like a later style). The fiberglass (or resin impregnated woven fiberglass) spike cut stock was fitted by a previous US owner and a spike bayonet added.

They’re actually selling knockoffs of resin stocks on eBay?! I can’t imagine that being a cost effective move.

Yeah, what Phos said. That SKS would have had wood furniture with a blade bayonet originally.

Any way you slice it, 300 in todays market is an absolute steal!

Appreciate the info!
Would the metal have been 'refurbished' in some manner? The sernos and barrel stamps are crisp; the magazine looks like in new condition, practically zero handling wear for a '57. Also, getting a spike collar to line up with an early blade lug; easy? And, how difficult (or worth the effort) would it be to retrofit a wood blade stock and a Chinese blade on this thing?

I wouldn't of blinked to hand over less than $300 for that rifle period. Great find Matchka

My opinion: the metal has gone through a complete refinish, likely the same time it received that bolt carrier.  Spike stock ferrules have a 'u' shape to them, blades have a 'v'.  The 'v' is often as wide as the 'u' and many people leave it as-is because it fits a spike well enough.  Many times they will be 'filed to fit' when the other kind is put on to get the bayo to seat well in the close position.

If the phenolic stock fits well, looks nice, and you don't dislike it, I'd just leave it as-is.  It will be a long search to find a decent blade stock, matching handguard (plus the handguard ferrule rivet if you need one), and a blade bayo for even 1/2 what you paid for this gun.  On the plus side, you have at least $80 in the phenolic stock and handguard should you chose to swap it out and maybe another $20 in the spike bayo, so there is that.

Decided to leave it as is. The "<300" is actually a 480 pack of PPU brass soft nose 123gr that I picked up on sale (Academy) over a year and a half ago. Fair enough deal for both of us.

Yeah, I think that qualifies as a steal! Nice catch!
