I took one of my Chinese SKS shooting after throughly cleaning it and had a severe allergic reaction to the little Cosmoline residue that was left. I broke out with a bad rash! I had no choice but to tastefully refinish the stock. No sandpaper was used. Here are a few pictures of the finished product. It’s an all numbers matching. I feel terrible I couldn’t leave it in its “as issued” condition.

Well if you had to for health reasons, so be it. You did a good job (although I'd probably go with an amber to garnet shellac if I faced the same situation). Really great that you avoided the use of sand paper  thumb1

Polyurethane vs Shellac; Kind of like Tylenol vs Advil. They both relieve pain but one works for one guy and the other for the next.

Now me??? I'd have gone with a satin finish instead of gloss, jes' sayin.  chuckles1  dance2
My Avatar is a pic of the real "Ghost" SKS in honor of xxxsks(joe). It is a pic of a fully decked out SKS in Capco hunter's kit. This was mine, the only other pic I had ever seen of one was Joe's.

what you do to it?

I chemically striped it, then wiped it down with wipes.  I allowed It to fully dry in the garage. Then I sealed it with 2 coats Minwax Oil Modified (Clear SEMI-Gloss) Polyurethane.

You're allergic to Cosmoline, but you bought an SKS? Talk about tempting fate!

I'm kidding, of course, but you did a nice job cleaning up that stock. What chemicals did you use to strip it?

The polymer (polyurethane) ought to protect you from exposure to petroleum products in the stock, but it's probably the most difficult finish to remove if you ever decide you want a different finish.

I was thinking shellac as well. More true to the original finish but you did fine with the poly. Looks good and less pesky now.  :)
