I have cleaned Cosmoline off several SKS's only to refinish the stocks shortly after. I just can't handle the smell and the feeling left on my hands After using handling the SKS. Perhaps I'm not cleaning them correctly?

This is my methodology:
1.Clean with dry rag to remove excess Cosmoline
2.Clean with Mineral Spirits thoroughly
3.Heat with industrial heat gun and wipe Cosmoline as it weeps out(about a 1 hour process).
4.Repeat step 2
5. Sponge wash with Dawn liquid dish soap and water
6. Allow to dry overnight
7.Apply Howard Feed-N-Wax

What should I do differently?  Does the smell ever go away?

Thanks- Geo\Jorge

I love the smell!  :)
You do more than i do though. i like to let it sweat out in the summer too, probably just because im lazy ike that.  No wait, its the organic solar powered cosmo removal process, so i am eco friendly and cutting edge, yeah, thats it. thumb1

I never go overboard cleaning the stock. I want my sks as dark as it appears when received. Ill put the stock in a big green plastic leaf bag and set it on the dash at an angle in the hot sun to try and ouuuz the grease out. Everything mentioned is pretty much spot on. Ill spray break parts cleaner in the bolt / FP channel and trigger group and anywhere else needed on metal. Blow it all out real good with air compressor. Then Rem oil and then blow it out also : ) All while warm. Never clean on a cold day.
