a friend has a chinese stamped sks he wants to sell and i told him i'd try to find a starting point for a price. has been fired but in original condition not beat up. i've read about these but it's been awhile. suppose to be rare i think. i was thinking they weren't to be released to the public but some got out some how. not 100% on this info but sure some here will know more. if you can help with a price would be nice.

also has some red box norinco chinasports 7.62x39 steel core factory 31 made 1993. whats this stuff bring in price now a days?

While these stamped receiver guns are uncommon, I don't really consider them valuable. They are more of just a neat oddity. I would say at the most it adds about $50 value over any other milled receiver gun of the same condition. I remember seeing two stamped guns on Gunbroker in the past 6 months. I think one of them sold for about 450 bucks. The other one didn't sell because the guy thought it was worth some ridiculous amount that it never reached reserve.

Rarity is in the eye of the beholder.  I'd consider them uncommon not rare, but they are certainly collectable.  Some guys might consider a stamped gun to be the holy grail, while others wouldn't give a premium on the gun at all because they wouldn't want to fire it (they are of dubious quality and are certainly prone to severe stock cracking from the stress risers caused by the darned rivets).  If you're selling to a collector, somewhere within $50 of $500 is probably a reasonable price.

Consider that these can be found selling on GunBroker for well under that price (avg. price of any Chinese SKS on GB was just over $350 last year) when the seller simply considers them another Chinese SKS.  They can also have ridiculous $800+ price tags on them as well when the seller knows what he has and thinks it's worth much more than the collecting community as a whole does.

The Norinco Ammo is hit or miss.  Sometimes you'll find a guy who has bought into the "armor piercing" meme and is hoarding the stuff and will buy it at a slight to moderate premium to currently produced steel case ammo.  The train of though goes: "It can no longer be imported, so it must be worth big $$"  That works for certain things, but for a commodity item like ammo, I don't think it holds much water since Norinco quality isn't head and shoulders above everything else currently on the market.  I'd much rather spend 23 cents a round buying new production Golden Tiger from SGAmmo than to drop more than that on Norinco Steel core that may or may not have been stored correctly for the past 25 years.

Everyone is going to have their own opinions of course.  There is no 'right' answer until you see what the market will bear.

I'll weigh in...
Over the last few years, I've sold 3 of them. 1 sold for 1k after Connecticut....it was in excellent condition and original.....the next one went for 750 about 5 months later and my last one(not matching and mediocre condition) went for the 450. They are definitely not as plentiful as most other sks's. Rare? That's up to the buyer and how bad they want it. I have another one going onto GB next week....and depending on condition, numbers, etc......it'll list for a couple hundred more than my purchase price...at the end of the day.....it's simply supply and demand.....and that's a constantly moving target....
