Saw this on gb http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=538177111.  I can't find any examples of star/1956 bolt cover markings on yooper or google?  Rare or fake?

I've learned to never say never when it comes to those zany Russians, but I'd suspect the this one started life as a 1955 dated cover. How it got to looking like a '6' is anyone's guess all the way from originally like that, modified at refurb, or done stateside (and it may simply be a scratch or bad stamping on a blurry photo).  Regardless of what it is now, that 1st GRAU refurb stamp on it really tosses everything out the window in terms of whether we can say anything with any degree of certainty.

I do know that the Russians were apt to heavily modify receiver covers, so I see no reason why this one couldn't have been done by them.

I dont doubt the roll stamp delete happened in 56.

Very true that too. We even know in which S/N prefix (KP) the change actually occurred.  55 -> to blank star -> to blank cover is a pretty easy line to trace in them too.

Hmmm...  I dunno then.   Would be nice to get a better look at this cover.

Maybe you should contact the seller and ask if he can get you a clearer pic of the date and/or ask if they can verify the date 100% as 1955 or 1956. Interesting.
It's sad that the motto of young Americans isn't "live free or die" or "I regret that I have but one life to give for my country" or even "ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country". Instead their motto is "pee yourself, shelter in place and cry for help". Pathetic.

That a good idea Carl.  I don't see this thing selling at that price, but you never know.  thumb1

Here's one of the reasons I never say never when it comes to what the Russians could have possibly done to a receiver cover.  Letter И (1957) gun with a heavily scrubbed '55 cover and a very odd looking stock:

How much extra for the white shoe polish in the serials?   :))

If you can get more pictures see if you can get clear one of the date stamping on the underside of the cover too.
