Here is lucky #2.  Although cool/neat in its own right, it has some funky issues.  ???   This one was bought for $275, so who cares I guess.

#1: I found the muzzle to have been shaved down about 3/8, and I cannot tell for the life of me if this was done by Cong, or here in the states.

#2: For some funky reason it is sporting a polished Russian bayo with a straight ear collar having the same patina as the rest of the rifle. I know these straight ear collars and russian bayo combos are pretty costly to find/buy, so I dont really see bubba buying this as a replacement on a crusty chinese.

#3: It s total mixmaster of serials, but the trigger and mag do match each other. All components have the same patina as one another and everything seems to have been together on this rifle for a long time.

#4: The cleaning rod looks to be a plum color, is 1/2" too long, has no threads on the end, and is rounded at the end where threads are supposed to be.... trimmed down 91/30?

#5:  I have no idea what this sling is....  It does however fit perfectly and has a Chinese look to it.  Type 63/68 sling?

#6:  Someone added a USA made spring loaded firing pin. I have already rectified this situation with a correct early Chinese FP.   :)

All in all, I believe it to be a good buy at $275 as it bears zero import marks and I didn't pay "papered price".  Here she goes..

For 275, can't beat it.  What are you going to do with it?  A shooter, truck gun, wall hanger?

Noticed they tried to blue the edge  (crown) where they cut down the barrel.  Does look funky though.

I dont see any cold bluing... just a dark patina like the rest of the rifle.  :-\

Im sure this is completely shootable and fully functional.  I may test fire it and then set it within the ranks of the sequential /26\ collection (wall of sks)  :)

I still cant find this sling anywhere on the interweb...  :(  Sure wish I knew what it is..

Strange no doubt. I thought at first someone might have removed the hardware and leather from one end until I ran across this. No help there but you aren't alone at least!

Thats def not the same sling as mine....  Mine has a sewn on leather tab that folds only once unlike the standard which fds twice and the stud goes through all three.  This is a strange animal.

NVA?! Why not, makes sense. I've been checking the internet for a while and found reference to a couple of bring backs wearing this type sling.

We may not be seeing enough to call it an NVA sling but I'd be willing to bet it is. I would also be willing to wager it isn't Chinese, that's not really their style is it? And don't they usually mark theirs on the inside?

I know...that's a really weak argument!

There is a stamp....  just that its under the leather loop where it bends around the rifle.  Its not readable other than a #2 at the end and what "looks like" crossed swords on the other side.   :-\

#10
Its a VZ58 sling.....  I googled "crossed sword leather sling" and found all sorts of VZ58 crap with crossed swords. Then googled VZ58 Sling and there it is.

Good detective work Cannon! Well I would have lost the NVA bet.

I dunno....  The NVA used some VZ58 rifles.

Type 56 assault rifle (from the People's Republic of China)
    Vz. 58 assault rifle

Sturmgewehr 44 assault rifle (captured by the Soviets during World War II and provided to the VPA and the NLF as military aid)
FG-42 German battle rifle captured by the Soviets from WWII and supplied to Vietnam Cong. Used in very limited numbers.
SVD-63 semi-automatic marksman rifle, also known as the "Dragunov" sniper rifle
MAS-49 rifle Captured French rifle from first Indochina War, used by NVA throughout 1950s and up to the mid 1960s

There is a good chance your old /26\ gun picked that up during the war! The sling looks to be in good condition but it definitely has some high mileage! I'm glad some bubba didn't get it before you did.

I may get lynched for saying this but I would take one like this over a Russian any day!  :o

Loose}{Cannon

I dunno.... both these rifles are rank. I mean, they smell like VC fromunda-butter and 50 year old soy sauce.... especially the slings.   sick1

rofl They might have spent too much time in a dark tunnel complex with Charlie!

That 7 mill is a real looker though.  thumb1

Ran across this site about slings, pretty extensive amount of info. It may be of some use to those that don't know about it already.
