Russian SKS / Russian SKS Stock Finish Question
« Last post by pcke2000 on Today at 12:44:53 AM »
Anyone here has actually tested if Russian SKS stock finish is really shellac?

Per my research, learning, and discussions, I was told that Russians never used shellac for rifle stock finish (original and refurb) post war. Instead, they used VK-1 lacquer.

Multiple long time Russian SKS collectors have told me that a big difference between shellac finish and lacquer finish is that shellac gives the stock shiny, glossy, and 'wet' appearance. I had no doubt about it until I got my first original finish June 1941 Tula made SVT-40. It is documented and confirmed that 1940-1941 SVTs used VK-1 lacquer finish (pre-war and very early war time: triple layer VK-1). The finish of the 1941 Tula SVT-40 is very shiny and glossy, and actually looks very much like original Russian SKS stock finish. This observation has led to my further suspicion if Russian SKS stock finish is really shellac.

I have no knowledge in paints, so would like to hear other forum members' opinions.

BTW, I also have an original finish 1940 Izhevsk SVT-40, the finish looks very different from Tula SVT stock finish, although Izhevsk also used triple layer VK-1 lacquer (documented and confirmed).

Never missed an airshow when my boys were young. Great way to do some serious male bonding.

On a personal note - Favorite prop plane is a P-40 and favorite jet is an F-4. Mind you, those are just the favorites, never met an aircraft I didn't like.

When I was in video production, I shot all the air shows from Bakersfield to Reno. I've got some killer stuff of a B25 and a P40 making early morning passes. Later, during the show, one of my camera guys shot out of the nose of a B25, Heavenly Body. PAX

I've got a couple US shoulder holsters. One for ma 1911 and one for a 4 inch .38 S&W (I presume). They stink pretty good. PAX

Well, I broke down and got it. This whole SKS thing is addictive. Who would have thought?  rofl

The metal parts are all in good shape and appropriate. There is already another mid-50 ИЯ prefix rifle in the database. The only thing that looks funny is the fonts on the stock. It's cool that the stock was originally from '50 to as the original sanded stamp is still seen but the new fonts are kind of suspicious. Bubba was here? The finish is also not what my other ones are but it's hard to tell on refurbs sometimes.

For stock finish, see this post on gunboards forums:

I have some extra Yugo SKS and M48 pouches. Also some FAL pouches from Austria.

I'm always on the prowl for 1911 pouches, myself.

I love leather militaria. Holsters, sheathes, scabbards, slings, belts, pouches, etc.

very cool to be collecting with your kids, neat collection.

It has been cool. Many an airshow and museum for 300 miles. They're grown men with chillin. It's a lot harder to be an airport bum these days. We still have "End-of-season" BBQ flyins. PAX

Fun stuff! I really like the WWII fighters and light bombers.

Between the ages of 8 and 14 I built a lot of models, mostly warbirds, some tanks and vehicles. I used to go to the specialty hobby shops every month or two and agonize over the 2 or 3 Airfix, Revell, etc. kits to pick out that Id be able to afford with my modest allowance.  rofl
