I'm late to the party with this news. That popping in your ears may be the vacuum created by everyone buying up all the remaining M855. SG Ammo still had some 30 minutes ago.
QUICK I NEED SOME I NEED A BUNCH I NEED IT ALL!! Wait...what's m855?
Bearing ArmsGOODBYE GREENTIP? ATF Seeks To Ban Common SS109/M855 5.56 Ammunition - Bearing Arms (http://bearingarms.com/goodbye-greentip-atf-seeks-ban-common-ss109m855-5-56-ammunition/)
The sad thing is, now that it's not a dual purpose ammo with widespread availability to civilians, I bet the price armed forces and police SWAT teams have to pay goes through the roof. They'll just wind up needing more $$$ to train and resupply. ??? What viscous cycle.
This is only the green tip armor piercing stuff?@
Yes, just the green-tipped (steel tipped) penetrator ammo with the SS109 bullet. It's not even AP in the traditional sense since it still has a lead core behind the steel tip.
Nazi pigs
The slow erosion of our freedoms. The boiling frog.
Stock up now on whatcha can.
Yep, like Worm said it's a "slow erosion". One day we may wake up and the ammo shelves are empty...with zero chance of a refill. I believe the Regime knows they will never take all the guns in America stickup1 so they do the next best thing...dry up the ammo AND the components to "roll your own".
It's coming.
Now go ahead...call me chicken little!
I don't care...that didn't hurt moon1
Just when 5.56x45 prices were declining too, especially for M193 that had been in somewhat lower demand due to the rising popularity of M855. This spike of high demand for M855 (and SS109 bullets) may make prices on the myriad of other varieties still available drift back up.
The irony is that this action will probably ensure that there will be millions of rounds of M855 sitting in US basements and closets for decades to come, since it is now an unavailable/rare cartridge and people will use it sparingly. If the justifying intent was to eliminate the supply to protect the LEOs from having their body armor penetrated by criminals wielding ARs firing this ammo, then the opposite effect may have occurred.

Just asking, I get the whole body armor thing, but what good is it against, say large calibers, .338 Win mag, or even a hot .45-70. It may not penetrate, but I don't think one is just going to get up and walk away after taking a hit from one.

Yes sir, one day we may not be allowed to buy anything-GUN. Just depends on the majority in Congress, and then our freedoms are all gone.
Then it might be time to use all that we've stocked.Quote from: Garand1957 on February 15, 2015, 01:07:55 PM

Well at least this will put a stop to the common wholesale slaughter of cops by this horribly lethal ammo. Seems like hardly a day goes by that you don't hear about the occurance of bullet riddled body armor and piles of dead cops murdered by this evil stuff. ::)
Can anyone show me the occasion of this actually happening? Even once?? jd

Having been a cop for over 17 yrs jd I do not personally know of this happening nor can I honestly remember hearing of it. I can't find any record of it on the internet either.
Backdoor gun control as I see it.
They say these are "cop killer" rounds because they can penetrate body armor .
If that's so then what about .308 FMJ or the surplus FMJ ammo for your Mosin , Mauser , K-31 or SKS etc. ?
No question this is just another form of gun control.
"Penetrate body armor". OK so what's my 500grain Buffalo Bore .45-70 round or .338 Win Mag gonna do to body armor, it may or may not penetrate, but it sure ass hell not gonna feel nice. Certain body armor is not even rated for a x25 tokarev round. X54r heavy ball is a nasty round, and its typically just lead core.
I think the admin thinks "we can't ban firearms all together" so let chisle the ammo away. Then they are left with nothing more than clubs.
And one thing I think effects it, all these pistols and SBRs made from rifles. They were gonna do a PSL in a pistol a while back, if done there would have went that surplus ammo. The maker actually recanted and destroyed the prototype due to the uproar it caused.

Yes, the pistols are how they are legally justifying the proposed ban.
Regarding the PSL, a DMR rifle converted to a pistol length begs the question WHY? banghead1 Makes about as much sense as trying to make a sniper rifle out of an M1 carbine.
Always wished they never started making these 'pistols' out of ARs and AKs.... knew it would bring on some kinda bite in the ass.

Cause its "cool". No clue, but at times the firearms community as a whole is their own worst enemy. "Hey let's do this with a known assault weapon" insta-ban once the powers that be catch wind, then its followed buy whining and crying about rights. Then prices on stuff normal shooter enjoy skyrocket out ta sight, and buying selling and getting screwed starts. Its a vicious circle, sometimes with no one to blame other than those who create these wonderful pretty much useless type of weapons.
