Title: SKS with different looking wood
Post by: Wave on February 03, 2026, 06:29:15 PM
I am in Canada.  Bought it 6 years ago. The wood looks different with my other SKS. Do anyone have similar SKS?

The serial # is X0009. The factory code is 26 (the markings are smaller and lighter than other SKS).

First off, welcome to the Files.
Second, is the sling swivel on the left side of the butt stock on that? It appears to be a very late '60 or maybe '61 Chinese Letter series SKS and yes that stock wood is common to many SKSs here in the US for that era.

Welcome!  thumb1

I see a couple of wood patches (circular and oval). The stock was refinished, perhaps after someone in Canada did those repairs, or possibly when the Chinese refurbished it. It does look like the wood on these early Type 56s, as GG mentioned. The "letter series" were made ca. 1959-60 before Soviet assistance had departed China.

Welcome to the boards!  Glad to have you here.  Adding to the great info that GG and P32 have already mentioned, I'll say that you have a pretty rarely seen letter X prefixed carbine. I only have 3 other serial numbers in the database.

Can you post some more detailed photos of the stock and of the other serialized components? (Bolt, bolt carrier, trigger group, magazine, and any parts that might be electric pencilled?  Would go quite a long way towards allowing us to figure out whether that stock is original or a replacement.  thumb1

Thanks everyone for the info. Here are more pictures. My other SKS's wood are new. But looks paint on un-polished wood.

I think all parts are original. The mental parts are in better condition than wood.

I think the government will ban SKS in Canada soon. I have to turn in my SVT40, which was banned not long ago.

Do you have to turn it in, or can you sell it?
