Title: Jerry Miculek shoots a Chinese SKS
Post by: Garand1957 on January 03, 2015, 06:12:42 PM
Jerry Miculek shoots a Chinese SKS off hand at 400 meters.
He's getting old now but still a hell of a shot.
Also don't recall ever seeing anyone load an SKS magazine that way lol

Between the way he loads it and the statement "it just takes it a long time to shoot", I just had to quit watching. The words inane and amateurish come to mind.

Clearly you guys don't know who he is.
Also he said the SKS cycles slow compared to an AR 15 ...which it does, he should know.
He holds about every record for speed shooting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzHG-ibZaKM

He could be the fastest gun in the west for all I care. I'm supposed to suck his toes and let him make vacuously awkward presentations beyond critique just because he's some sort of Legend?

I was a 3-handicap golfer throughout my youth, yet I failed miserably at being an instructor. The golf swing was just beyond words to me, I could never explain it, so I could never teach it.

I've been breathing for 31 years. Does that qualify me as an expert on the respiratory system?

The power to execute an act and the ability to eloquently and clearly explain the act are two different things. Most who can do one, can't do the other.

Pretty sure that was not an instruction video on shooting .
He made some great shots .
He explained it well IMHO and was clear without any pretension of being an SKS expert although he is a great rifle shot by any measure.
Pretty sure hes not interested in sticking his foot in your mouth.

I like the guy he seems honest and not a smart-ass....then again I like my dog more than most people  ;)

I usually just reserve Youtube time for videos of ducks being chased by cats wearing shark masks while riding Roombas. Watching people shoot is tedious, I like intellectual content, which is why I strictly watch videos of ducks being chased by cats wearing shark masks while riding Roombas.

I bet Hickok45 knows how to load an SKS to an effect that doesn't make me cringe  rofl2

I'm sure he knows how to use a stripper clip.
He was having fun with the video but that may have flew higher than cats chasing ducks and a little hard to track.
I like Hickok45 and have watched many of his videos. Even the ones without cats and ducks but after a while you get tired of the 2 liter bottle blow up and the gong shots no matter how intellectual.
I agree shooting videos are mostly like watching professional bowling, just exhibitions of talent after years of practice. But if your looking for intellectual stimulation stick with cat and duck videos  :)

Miculek is a danged good shooter no doubt about it and even though Jerry has tried to beat a record set in the '30s by Ed McGivern, Ed's record stands to this day! In my humble opinion, rapid fire at point blank range with the SKS proves nothing of value as it was developed to be a battle rifle.

It's interesting that he has shown, as others have on video, that the SKS/7.62X39 combo is a good shooter out to 400 meters with factory ball ammo. I'm sure all of you have read and heard as well as I that the SKS isn't much good beyond 175-200 meters!

I wouldn't want to take a hit from one at that range!

His rapid fire was at a point blank range but close range rifle shots in combat were not only common but frequent.
Yes , the SKS is a battle rifle but interestingly the Russians incorporated a a fixed bayonet.
Clearly the fixed bayonet was not intended for long range stabbing LOL.
So as then and today military battle rifle engagements are at every range from barely visible to bleeding on you when you thrust a bayonet in them.
Regardless I would never have posted had I thought a simple video showing the capability of the SKS fired OFF HAND at 200 and 400 meters by a true marksmen would become so controversial.

I agree with alfred, Garand I'm glad you posted this video that demonstrates the capabilities of the SKS! It has long been put down (a friend of mine once called it an "armadillo gun") by people that obviously have little or no experience with the SKS. But once again we have seen what it's capable of in the hands of a good shooter.

Having spent nearly 18 years of my life as a Peace Officer I simply am not impressed by point blank rapid fire by any rifle/carbine! Now these 200 and 400 yard shots made standing & unsupported are a horse of a different color.  thumb1 I'm impressed!

Garand I sincerely did not intend to ruffle any feathers. I hold you in high esteem for the knowledge and experience you have continuously brought to this forum.  clap1

They would have to get used to the stacking order if they loaded 10. He loads 6 so it is more forgiving.

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if the loading method was why he had feed issues (I've never seen an SKS malfunction before).

But  there's absolutely no doubt that the guy is a fearsome marksman.

It's like anything, a learning curve for the guy, it amounts to taking a top NASCAR racer, throwing him in a Toyota Prius or a rally racer in a stock Smart Car and telling him to do what he does,.

The interesting thing would be give him a week or two working with the weapon, or even add a week tweaking on it, then really see what it will really do.
