Digging around the usual interweb posts, YJ, forums, etc. - differing opinions. Does the ☆ stamp on the receiver signify arsenal refurb, import or ?
And, the CCCP stamp. Exclusively for export?
Depends which star you are referring to. The star on the letter gun receivers next to the serial number?
Or the inspection stamp star that is sometimes seen in various locations on the receiver beneath the stock?
Pictures of the markings you’re referring to would be helpful.
Near the serno. I'll post some pics today.

Not a refurb mark.
Some call it a Tula star.
However i have also seen it explained that Tula production sks ended in 1955 in order to switch to AK production. As the suggestion goes, from 1956-1958 the Letter series sks45's were assembled from a large cache of parts at one or more facilities throughout the USSR. If this is true then i would think the receiver star is possibly a red army property mark .
Right, if you’re referring to the original serial number and the small star to the right of the SN, then that’s the Tula star. The suffix letters indicate 1956-58 manufacturing years as shown in the link. (An alternative hypothesis is well summarized by BB. I personally think this alternate hypothesis is unlikely, though plausible.)
If the CCCP you’re referring to is part of the importer’s applied “unique” serial number, as required by the ATF, then that’s a marking added in the US.
Here's three of 'em. Not the best pics, but you'll get the idea. Apart from the ☆, these are refurbs, no arsenal stamps on the carrier covers, only the |\| on two, and one with the |\| and the diamond stamp. The sernos on the carrier covers do match the receivers. One is a black bolt, two have original serno stamps on the stocks, the third has the xxxxx with a force matched serno. All have great blades; at least the triggers, mags & covers sernos all match. Wood is very nice on each one.
OBTW, any thoughts on current/fair sell price for these refurbs?

Top and bottom are 1956, middle is 1958.
About $700-1400 depending on degree of refurbishment, mismatch, condition on these single/double refurbs.

Grail gun. You and LC are the only ones I know in possession of one of those rarities. I’ve been looking for years. (Still a Russian Tula Star of course).
I've been looking for years too, saw one from a guy I met online a long while ago but it wasn't for sale.

I would say even in today's market, it would be difficult to get more than $850 (even on GB), unless it's a matching non-refurb. Based on my observation, to most common buyers, Russian letter guns are somehow less attractive than those with Tula/Izhevsk symbol on receiver cover, even though Letter guns are generally less common and truly non-refurbs are quite rare. Many collectors are usually only interested in non-refurb letter guns, especially those in the original laminated stock.

I'll sanction the hijack since I think Matchka's request has been filled rofl
What we call the Soviet-Sino Type 56s. The first 2000 Type 56s that were made on Tula star marked receivers, just before the ghosts. Only 12 have been recorded in our serial number data, all of which came in with the 1980s/90s imports, so marked accordingly. Five of them are Para length and seven are regular full length.
Hijack is A-OK. GREAT info!

Far as known, they were new non-serialed receivers.
