I have a bit of a fixation with carrying a few ready rounds onboard whichever platform I bring to the range, including the SKS. I've found a pouch that works for me, but I'm curious...
Do you carry ammunition on your SKS? If so, how do you do it?
My SKS is reliable with detachable 30rd mags so I keep the mags loaded with ammo but not inserted into my SKS but in a shoulder carrying pouch. When I am ready to fire, I insert the mags into my SKS. It works for me.
I have an SKS set up for hunting that I use 5rnd Zytel detachable mags for, one in and 3 in an East German Grenade pouch on my belt. Then I also have a butt stock cheek rest pad that has a pocket and velcro strips for ammo. 7rnds in the pocket on one strip and 7rnds on the strip outside the pocket.
I'm interested. Any pic's guys?
Sure, here are a few. I use the Strike Hard pouch. It holds three clips. My only gripe is that the shock cord is pretty flimsy, but I used paracord to hold it on.

Here's my setup; I know you can take a loaded stripper clip and slip 2 cartridges into the webbing leaving the other 8 outside, but I haven't tried it on the inside sleeve to know if the zipper will close or not. But having the 14 rnds in the webbing I can just throw 1 extra rnd in the pouch so with the mags I have 35 rnds onhand for any hunt outing.

Nice stuff guys, thanks.
On clips, parked in my vest or jacket pockets; or loose if I'm at the range & too lazy to refill the clips - just dump 'em in the magazine.
I only carry 5 rnds in the rifle when hunting with my SKS. Don't ever need more than that at any given time. One shot, one kill most of the time.
I carry a range bag with both preloaded mags, loose rounds and a loader. My ear muffs, some tools I may need, towel, etc...

I've always done the same with my SKSs in the past. I don't ever go after anything with an SKS that might need 10 rounds, and loading 5 saves me the trouble of having to dump out a bunch of extra and put them back away when I leave the field. It may also be the old school in me, when I was growing up 5 was the mag limit for most game. They've since lifted that restriction here in AZ but I still rarely hunt anything with more than 5 loaded.
I guess I'll consider making an exception if I ever hunt javelina or feral hogs, they roam in packs.

In Texas, 5 rounds is max for "in season" hunting, except for hogs. Birds max is plugged at 3. Sure, you can have more on you, just NOT in the rifle/sg.
In the Lone Star state, I'm always hunting for hogs. Thems pesky pests iz evrywhar!

In other words, you're makin' the bacon
If I lived in a feral hog infested area a full mag would be warranted for sure and a few spare strippers. I hear TX has the highest population of them in the country. I'm surprised that there's not a bounty program on them there. At least for a while until things get under control.
