Title: Triplets! Sorta-kinda (15 pics)
Post by: Matchka on April 04, 2021, 04:51:51 PM
Snagged all three yesterday for $850 OTD, private sale.
Ok, they're refurbs - star on receiver, one bbq, one force-matched stock, a black bayonet & an interesting gray-ish rear sight. No forced numbers on the usual parts.
So, '55 or '56 on these Tulas? (Rifles are lined up the same in all pics.)

The raw metal grey rear sight leaf is common on heavy refurbs from what I recall. My '50 heavy refurb is like that as well

Thanks, all! Which one is the '58?
Deal was local. Seller brought 'em in to my LGS for consignment. He balked at the fees and CA's 10-day waiting period (after each rifle sold & cleared DROS). LGS calls me. Cash up front talks.  dance2

Good looking rifles!

What's with that gray rear sight leaf?

Granted, I don't know a whole lot about the sight leaf variations on SKSs, but I've been looking at them in gun shops and at gun shows for years and have yet to see that particular feature.

I mentioned it a couple of posts up, the gray "in the raw" metal leafs are somewhat common on heavy refurbs. Just part of the refurbishment process.

I believe the gray color is a type of finish, not really raw metal. But I agree it's very common on refurbs.

Being in CA, the price was even sweeter

Yeah, probably more of a gray parkerizing, but the "in the raw" look is how it was explained to me way back when and I've never seemed to be able to break the habit of calling it that, LOL. I should get my '50 out and look at it more closely to confirm.

A change in color (& texture) is relatively common when parts are stripped and recoated/replated/reblued what-have-you. It's quite common for firearms parts that have been reproceesed to look quite different than parts that only go through the initial process once.  Chinese guns that have been refurbished sometimes have a dull look to them and I've always attributed this to the etching and refinishing steps that these refubs go through.  I guess it's like anything, the skill of the technician and the quality of the process plays a big part in how the final outcome looks.

I know in my job this can be quite frustrating as newly anodized aluminum parts that are colored (for example dyed blue) if stripped and re-anodized and recolored will have a *totally* different shade of blue to the extent that they no longer match the rest of the hardware.  Always bothers me to see the "sticks out like a sore thumb" cover or hardware component that you *know* has been reworked in an assembly like that.  We typicaly go with black dyed anodize as the dark black hides variability better, but if you have a good eye and look close enough, you can still pick out the reworked parts.
