Title: How to get trigger housing to release?
Post by: BMont on March 18, 2021, 02:01:47 PM
Hey guys...

I wanted to share this Russian sks that I picked up last fall sometime.  I have been trying to get the trigger housing to release frexom the rifle to fully disassemble the rifle to determine exactly what I have.  I tried briefly last fall a couple times and again this morning but that bugger will not budge.  I dont want to ding it up but I do want to get it disassembled if I can.  I have disassembled many sks's over the years but have not run into this before.

This one has the spring loaded firing pin but unsure still what it really is .  Any suggestions?

First, nice old Russian, looks like a heavy refurb late 1950 due mostly to the BBQ bolt carrier and the 45 degree gas block. Receiver cover was probably stamped force matched or something like that during refurb process.
As to the FCG(fire control group) removal, it is still the same as all others. Safety has to be on while popping the catch at the rear of the FCG. Safety on those is friction and not the spring loaded 'over center' style that came later. Also, can't remember for sure, but it may not have a tension spring. If it doesn't that means upward pressure needs to be applied while popping the catch.

I use a 12" long #1 phillips screwdriver with some masking tape at the end and with the rifle upside down and the safety on push hard on the latch at a 45 degree angle and pull up on the trigger guard.

Similar concept. I make sure the safety is on, turn the SKS upside down on a padded surface, put a brass punch in the dimple of the latch at about a 45 degree angle, and smack it with a hammer. Pop!

I use an old M91/30 firing pin set in an old file handle, works awesome for the all around SKS tool.

Though I've never had a situation where the spring in the stock was missing or damaged, I've heard horror stories of missing springs and those trigger groups being an absolute bear to get out of the stocked gun (TG in a barreled receiver is sometimes tough to get apart too, but there is quite a bit of space between the TG and receiver with the stock not there).  If you can't get it after trying the above, you may need to round up another set of hands that can pull up on the TG while you depress the tang with your screwdriver/brass punch/tool of choice.

One final thought is to check, then double check, that the safety is actually functional when you flip it.  If a inexperienced guy had it before you and didn't have the safety on when he took out the TG it may have damaged it and now you're the one who has to deal with a broken part up in there gumming up the works and making this operation difficult...just a WAG, but I could see it happening.  dntknw1

As my friends in North Carolina (Nof-Kerliner) would say, "Yain't holdin' yer mouf right."

Apparently, that's really important.
