There seems to be a big influx of Carcano's from Ethiopia (?). I see them in different places in the 200-250 range. All reports point to very uneven quality, though. Basically a crapshoot. Did anyone here get those? Any intel on better places to buy from? I'm thinking whether I should take a chance on those before they run out.
I believe it's Royal Tiger bringing them in...they seemed to have quite a few last week when I was checking out their stock.
Royal Tiger Imports (IO Inc.) brought in all of the Ethiopian sourced guns, including those Carcanos. Condition is poor to fair on most of the stuff they brought in, which they call fair to very good. I'd avoid them.
Almost at the same time, PW Arms imported a number of Carcanos, directly from Italy from what I've found out. I bought an antique M91 Carbine, aka Moschetto Modello 1891 (folding spike bayonet) from Dan's Ammo that was from the PW Arms batch. I was very happy with the condition of it. DK Firearms has also had these. I haven't checked either site recently to see what they have.
Kinda wished I would have asked this question :).
I recently bought 2 Carcano's. One from Classic Arms, a Cavalry model. Then I ordered an M91 from Palmetto. I don't have either of them yet, Palmetto has yet to ship the one I ordered. The one from Classic should be in this week. I can let you know what I got. I did read the reviews on Palmetto, there were 3 or 4 really bad reviews and the remainder were all 3 to 5 stars.
Guess I will see and hope for the best.
I checked my order at Palmetto, it had not shipped, so I just went ahead and canceled it. The Calvary model will be all I am getting at this point. I may look other places, but after thinking on it, I may just use that money for another purchase.
Thanks @Phosphorus32! Looks like DK Firearms still has them but Dan's Ammo does not. I guess I'll give DK Firearms a shot.
One thing on the shortened rifles, Carcanos used progressive gain rifling, their twist rate increases with barrel length. Shortening the M91 barrel to carbine/calvery length removed the quick twist rifling at the end of the barrel. Meaning some are prone to keyholing the long bullets because there is not enough spin to stabilize the long 6.5mm bullet. I don't think it effects the M91.41 variants.
@agrace please post pics of yours once you get them and I'll do the same for mine (just placed an order for one - you guys are ENABLERS).
Clarification: I only know from direct evidence that Dan's Ammo got their Carcanos from PW Arms. I don't know who is supplying PSA, Classic Firearms or DK. I am guessing that all of them got their Carcanos from PW Arms. This is based on my assumption that RTI is retaining all of their imports for retail sales at maximum profit, because that sounds like Uli rofl

Understood. The DK website mentioned "Carabinieri storage" so I took it as a possibility that it could be indeed PW imports. Additional googling also suggested that PSA and DK are PW imports. Anyhow, I've gambled more money than $250, so fingers crossed. I'll report on the condition once I get it. The reviews on the DK website were good too (I hope they don't block the negative ones like Classic supposedly does).

ENABLERS... :) nea1
wanna really, really old 6.5 Carcano, I have an M91 Carcano, the Carcano carbine and then there's this... https://sks-files.com/index.php?topic=3721.0
These were done by the same method as the "P series" Finnish Mosins, a.k.a. the Salerno method... Italy had it figured out before the Finnish Mosins..
My Carcano Cavalry from DK hasn't shipped yet but I enabled myself (ENABLERS EVERYWHERE) to get a TS. The TS's seem to be sold out in most places and are generally found in rough shape. I got myself one from Axis Arms. Super fast shipping. Here are some pics. Few obligatory cracks :( but nothing too crazy. The bore looks like s**t. Not sure whether it's counterbored or simply rusted out. Could be both. I do see some semblance of lands, though. The blueing on the outside is surprisingly good. Several nice cartouches on metal. Made in 1913 (Brescia). Does have a FAT 1947 on the barrel. The barrel and the stock match. The mag doesn't. Interestingly I don't see any serials on the bolt and the receiver. The receiver color doesn't seem to be the same. Is it normal?
Overall, a project gun just like the description on the website suggested. Not a complete waste of money but it's not a beauty queen, that's for sure. Hopefully that Cavalry carbine turns out better....

Anyway. The 1941-XIX FNA Brescia from DK showed up today. In MUCH better shape than that TS. There is a hairline crack off the tang - what is up with my luck lately? But it's pretty minor. Overall I'm happy with it. The bore looks ok. Not great, but reflects light and definitely fine for a surplus rifle like that. Blueing is decent with some minor surface rust that should clean up fine. Here are some pics.

It's kind of cool to see the change in firearm fashion, so to speak. The hexa/octagons so prevalent early on made way to round shaped barrels, just like in Mosins.
Good looking carbines thumb1
Year I (1) of the rule of Mussolini and his Partito Nazionale Fascista (National Fascist Party) began on October 29, 1922, so the year XIX is October 29, 1940 to October 28, 1941. Hence, the "double date" on yours but not on agrace's, since his predated the seizure of power by Mussolini.

The bore looks like s**t.
That was not very nice of me to say. The bore needs to be downgraded. It is more like Rome's famous Cloaca Maxima as you can see for yourself. You can feel the jag hitting pits when you pull it back.
(https://i.ibb.co/w7dPmWJ/IMG-8745.jpg) (https://ibb.co/2SFC4t8)
This afternoon I thought I'd spend few hours cleaning up the TS. Boy, that's a PROJECT gun. Some pitting and bluing loss under the wood line, some wood rot. LOTS of gunk and rust (most of it surface though). I did what I could but it'll take a few sessions to get it in shape. I doubt I'll ever shoot it. Don't trust this shotgun bore...
This is the first time I disassembled a Carcano and I've got to say it's a pretty nifty action, especially considering the vintage. Found a cool animation showing how it works:
https://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2014/05/28/reconsidering-carcano/
I wouldn't be scared to fire it, I have a few that when I got them, the bore was a patch shredder. After a few rounds, they turned out pretty decent.....for their given condition, and shoot ok.
I've got an 1897 91/30 Hex that I picked up with a heap of other stuff from an estate sale. Got boolits but have never fired it. What type of sling should it have? PAX
Did I say Carcano's have the potential to be addictive. Well, they are. I relapsed and got myself another one (the one on the right in the family photo). Arguably, I'm most disappointed with the last one. I did expect a correct early one, not a refurb with a sanded stock and attached handguard. No cleaning rod either. I do like the idea of long M91 very much, it'd go well with the other long ones of that time I have (Mosin and Rubin). It might have to wait, as there are plenty of other cavalry variations to get before the current import dries out :)

I bought one of the antique offerings from Dan's Ammo. Pics are below except I don't have a picture of the two-piece cleaning rod that is in the buttstock. It has a Terni bolt on a Brescia rifle, but the rifle doesn't appear to have received any updates/modifications. I'm quite happy with it.

You guys are putting a serious hurt on my pledge to avoid getting into any new (old) calibers.
Back in the 80's I fell into a 6.5 Carcano for something like 30 bucks. Back then, ammo was made of hen's teeth, so it was essentially a wall hanger for a couple of years until I sourced a couple boxes of ammo and a few clips.
I wound up trading it off in the early 90's.
Really nice, Phosphorus32! All correct and with a sling! Did you get the sling separately?
I got mine from Dan too (he just had another batch of antiques that didn't last very long) and perhaps that was the source of my disappointment as I saw all kinds cool rifles Gunboards folks got there and I got my expectations run wild. It's not a bad deal, just I wish I didn't get the sanded stock - I can live with the updated hand guard but the state of the stock hurt me a bit :(
Larry, if you thinking about getting back into Carcano's, now it's not a bad time. It is a slippery slope, though ;)
I bought the sling separately. I got two brass and two steel buckle slings. A bit expensive at $45 and $40, respectively, but Carcano slings are hard to find. The brass ones are gone but there are a few steel ones left.

I just checked my slings, and found one. It's the right style but a little thinner and too new. I put it on anyway but will likely change it for an older Garand type leather unit. I imagine they could be found with anything strung on them. PAX

Well, I just got a phone call from Northridge and that are out of slings. I guess their website availability was not up to date, so they took my order but could not fulfill it. Too bad. The lady on the phone said they had a ton of them and they just sold them like crazy. Not surprised given how many Carcanos were imported recently. If anyone sees other places they sell them (or want to sell their) I'd appreciate a heads up.

Please see some pics of my newest acquisition for your viewing pleasure (and critique). I actually don't have the rifle yet, it's on its way - these are from the auction house. It is a interesting one (at least to me). A Torre Annunziata made in 1893 (first year of production) but I assume it was rearsenalized late based on the stock. The serial number looks to have been restamped, is that a common practice? And the bolt has a curved handle - a work of a 'corrector', or the Italians changed the bolt in 1947? It is a Tubata, some people don't like it but I kind of like this unique feature. Anyway considering that I got it at the price of an RTI beater I won't complain too much.

Looks like a nice one! thumb1
Interesting rifle! thumb1 It was definitely refurbished, and probably more than once. An earliest possible production year from one of the lower production arsenals (because they were all far lower than Terni), means it would have had to be in an odd place, like stuck in Libya, for it to not have been refurbished. The Tubata sleeving and reboring marking, a later style bent bolt, the 1947 Terni (FAT) refurbishment mark on the stock, all indicate that it remained in mainstream Italian service and received updating and refurbishment :o

Thanks firstchoice! This is probably one of my favorite CArcanos, and I own way too many now :-[ I posted more pics in the dedicated thread on the other forum https://www.gunboards.com/threads/torre-annunziata-1893-m91.1193420/
Could always spice up, enable that... Italian side.. I mean..... since your dabbling in 6.5 Carcano... :) This is not a Carcano, it was already old when the M91 Carcano was developed, but it is rechambered from 10.35x47Rmm blackpowder round to the "hot and new" 6.5 Carcano round, uses the same clip, plus... it's made in Italy. The Italian Vetterli M70/87/15.. Everyone makes a big deal out of relined barreled P series Finnish Mosins... well here is the rifle that started that method.
And yes.... it's even longer, both barrel and in over all length than the M91 Carcano.. chuckles1

I had my eyes on those - self-enabling all right chuckles1 chuckles1 Then I saw an episode of C&Rsenal on those and my enthusiasm diminished considerably. Apparently you'd need to make REALLY light loads for those to be shot safely...
I put 3 rds of PPU thru it.. after about 3 days of cleaning. It spoke one last time, now it's in retired status.. like my Swiss Vetterli and other things.. as I remember, it shot pretty decent at 50yrds considering it's.... think1 a 150 years old... :o

Finally got myself a transverse lug bayonet for a TS. Not sure if the grip are repro or not, but I'm keeping it.
