Title: 1942 Tikkakoski M91
Post by: Phosphorus32 on November 27, 2020, 10:09:14 PM
I picked this up about a month ago at an auction and it just arrived the day before Thanksgiving. Hey, I didn't wait 4 months to post this time ;)  The most notable aspect of its appearance is the unusual one-piece Finnish walnut stock.

The bore was blooming with old rust when I received it but my trusty CMP muzzle gauge indicated the bore measured 0.3015", so I thought it would be salvageable. A pre-shooting brushing and cleaning made some headway but patches still left a lot of lint behind. After running 15 rounds of light ball surplus down the pipe today, and another thorough multi-step cleaning for corrosively primed ammo, a very good bore appeared  :) It's certainly still dark but has very good grooves.

Note: In a response on Gunboards, Denny pointed out that the walnut blanks (pähkinäpuu aihioita) were bought from Germany in 1932.

Oh, and the unexpected antique status was a nice bonus; 1896 Tula.

Before pictures showed that it was a diamond in the rough. I could see some stripes on the stock in the full right shot and I figured the metal would look good after removing the preservative residue and adjusting the barrel bands correctly. I love to see them displayed at auction with a yellow film and surface rust  rofl

rofl I have scored a lot of Finns on antique receivers by random chance. I think 60% of my M39s are antiques too.

So, I'll admit GG I'm all over the place with my collection. SKS is first and foremost with my collection. I picked up a Mosin and it's like RM says if you avoid #1 then you can avoid #2. I picked up a Mosin and it was an M27 and now I have more than 1 Mosin (I'll just say). These rifles freak'n intrigue the crap out of me. There is just so much and I'm not that sure on some of them so it's held me at bay somewhat.

DON'T DO IT GG!  chuckles1

In fact, it has got so bad with Mosin's with me that I decided I'm going to do my best to stay with only a few model variants like M27, M28 and M39. LOL, yeah right!!!

P32, that's one helluva percentage you're pulling there! You definitley have a keen eye!

Thanks for the therapy GM, when I saw the SVT in the top right of your pic, it distracted me enough to get my brain back on the wagon.

This is why I don't buy Mosins fellas, I keep doing this to them. That used to be a real nice M44, I even threaded the muzzle and put an AK-74 style brake on it. MAN, that thing was so loud it would shake the stations at the range, and the flame it would produce. :o fart1
