Title: The Good, the Not So Bad & the Ugly
Post by: Matchka on August 18, 2020, 01:40:09 PM
Got this Tula for $120 from my car club buddy's widow's - garage sale. Stuck in an old, rotten golf clubs bag - she didn't even know it was there. At first she said "$50"(!) bcz, "It's a dirty old gun, and I don't like guns."
Anyway, it was filthy.
Cleaned it up, no rust, bore is excellent.

BUT, the stock has some sort of shiny lacquer finish on it. Any ideas on how to get this stuff off without tearing into the serno and general dents and dings? Year of manufacture? TIA

You have a Chinese "Ghost" rifle according to the serial number on the left side of the receiver:

"shiny lacquer finish" I would try (gently) 0000 steel wool.

$120......You stole that, extremely lucky for you!

Damn, great find. I wonder if that was a "hidden purchase" from the wife.

Agree strongly with the two posts above this one.

Are there any import marks?  My guess would be either imported from Albanian or, if no imports, a possible bring back.  Cheers, Bruce.

"$120" :o Good of you to barter up the price thumb1 Great score on a ghost Type 56 that likely came in with the imports from Albania ca. 2012-14 based on the trench art dance2

Is it lacquer or shellac? Grab a cotton swab and wet it with denatured alcohol (rubbing alcohol will do as well) and rub it in an inconspicuous spot, like behind the trigger to see if some comes off. I'd be inclined to just hit it with some #0000 as owenj492 suggested to cut down the gloss a bit.

Ain't no Tula! Wasn't paying attention when I posted pics. Probably move to Chinese.

Picked up a Cherry's GSO Yugoslavian that has some kind of clear coat on the metal from being applied on the wood (accidental brushing?), mineral spirits did nothing, but Big Frontier 45 and CLP and elbow grease is removing it, not sure why someone would do that to a perfect firearm to begin with....but I'm leaving the wood alone, just removing it from the metal.

Mo pics. It's an OI. 'Dot matrix' style, under the barrel.

Nice! Have you decided on what you will do on the stock and handguard?

Gonna try to rough it up a bit with some 0000, see how that goes. Or, just drown it in paint stripper!
