So, I had mentioned having obtained from someone over in the other boards a beater Chinese SKS. Here it is;

And here is what I've gotten done so far. Need to pull the bolt carrier back out so you can see it better, but it polished up pretty good. I may blue it though, haven't decided yet.
Got the bayonet collar, mag, and receiver cover cleaned up and re-blued as well as getting the bolt carrier polished up. I also did a quick touch up on the receiver. I am setting this up to hunt with so am debating whether to re-blue it, cote it, or have it dipped in a camo along with the Choate stock I got from Duffarmy.

I have a SKS Sporter (takes AK-47 Mags) in similar condition that needs re-bluing, what bluing brand did you use, and what is your bluing steps you take? I have Brownells Oxpho-Blue because of the reviews I've read online.
nice work, your doing good. big improvement for sure.

Yes, you may remember the project post(s) I had from several years back with the bent barrels I straightened out on an M59/66 and turned it into a faux M1A SOCOM? Well I ended up selling it when I went to CA cause it wasn't Cali legal. banghead1 dash2
Anyway, I am basically rebuilding this into a similar setup cause I never should have sold the other one. Hopefully this will shoot as nice as the other one did.

I've used Oxpho-Blue before when I worked at a gunsmith shop as well as Birchwood Casey's Perma Blue. THey are both good but don't take as well to Chinese steel on the SKS as I'd like so this time around I am using Birchwood Casey's Super Blue which gives a deeper darker blue than the other two. More black than blue actually. I like it for Comm-block firearms.

Yeah, I almost had buyer's remorse on this one when I got it in. A little rougher in person than in the pics. Gonna be my hunting rifle. The x39 SP rounds work great around here for Deer.

Thanks for the advice! thumb1
Owenj492 had asked me about the process steps I take when cold bluing and I missed that part of his question. So, here it is;
The basic steps are usually included in the packaging with which ever brand of cold bluing you use. Clean, coat, rinse off, repeat as needed.
The additional things I do are as follows;
CLEANING - I like to use Brakekleen(red can) as it will cut through about anything your firearm part can be gunked up with and leaves no residue. I will do an initial cleaning with it(outside for odors, etc) then I will take the part to the bench grinder and take a wire wheel(finer and wider is better as it leaves less streaking in the metal) to it to remove all existing bluing and any rust, burrs, etc. Then I go back outside for another spray of the Brakekleen. It is now ready for the bluing.
BLUING - I prefer to use the wood stick swabs they sell for cleaning, but if you don't have those then Q-tips work just as well. Apply liberal amounts onto the swab and then wipe onto the part(keep the swab wet. It is the same mentality as keeping your paint brush loaded). I like to use a single stroke down the length of the part when possible, kind of like painting, when entire part is coated then I look for light spots and, keeping the surface wet, will work on getting a good even coat. This will include working the swab in a circular motion after the initial strokes. Once the entire surface is coated I leave it for 30-60 seconds then go wash it off with cold water rubbing the entire surface with my fingers and thumb to remove any powdery build up left from the bluing chemical.
I will then, after drying the part off, go back over it repeating the bluing process until I am satisfied with the evenness of the bluing and it has achieved the color darkness I want. This usually can be achieved in 2 coats which is what I did for the parts I blued on this rifle. Remember the harder the steel and the more alloy it has on it the harder it can be to blue. A bolt carrier is going to be harder to blue than the receiver cover or a magazine.
FINISHING TOUCH - After I have completed my final wash and dry on the part I will take the part and rub it down with a light coat of gun oil(NOT CLP). That is where the light sheen comes from you see in the pics.
Anyway, for anyone interested. That is my process.
Once again thank you for the advice!
Nice job GG, I can already tell she's going to look great! thumb1
Damn fine job so far! Doing a resto, strictly for hunting - clean up, weatherproof as required, load and fire.

Soo, this is where I was at when I cam across my dream rifle, a CZ-527 American in 7.62x39(see my thread in Bolt Actions). What should I do with it now?
I pulled the scope back off to put it on the CZ, but that is all. Options are Shernic Bullpup, but I'm left handed. I could find a different stock and do one of my folder setups, or get another scope and finish it the way I originally intended, thoughts?
(https://i.ibb.co/z4ffkvm/IMG-1606.jpg) (https://ibb.co/RDHH5wg)
Since you mentioned you missed the first one built this way. I would finish the original plan and continue on as you intended. Just my thoughts. 😀

agrace, how are you? Been a while, good to see you around.(good to be around too, I know I have been awol for a while) :)
im also having good success with super blue touching up parts and pieces.
Super Blue is pretty good stuff, I redid an entire Russian in it, from the white...it kind of surprises me that they offer two different kinds of cold blue, when one is far superior to the other. They must have barrels of the old stuff they are hoping to phase out of existence into the market. The difference is night and day.
My method differs a bit though, If I don't fully strip down to the white using the handy Birchwood Casey rust and blue remover, I generally follow the directions..... But if I am in the white, and clean beyond clean, I will use the Super Blue, but I slow/stop the reaction first by hosing it down in Rem Oil...and then rinsing in hot water, then cold. Blast dry with a compressor, a little smoothing with 0000 wool and then repeat after reheating with a hair dryer or heat gun. I find the results to be more even and authentic in color, closer to a real bluing job.
Yep, my method was pretty simple, buff with a 3x steel wood and then degrease with mineral spirits , apply with q tip and then dunk in water after 30 seconds i havent felt the need to go back and re apply another round. Then i put some oil on the surface and let it sit for a day. so far they all have come out even and richly covered
Justin, sounds like your method is leaning a little towards the hot bluing style. Having worked in a gunsmith shop for a few years I got to the point where I would not go near the tanks. Seems like the acidic chemicals and odors were having a negative affect on my skin. Therefore, I went to the cold blue method for everything I do.
Reminds me of a kid back in elementary school who grew crystals using what he called 'bluing'. I cannot imagine being around vats of corrosive chemicals being particularly kind to skin, lungs, eyes....
If the same kid did this in a modern school environment, folks would show up in hazmat suits and shut down the building.

Okay fellas, got a few update pics on my project. Cleaned up the barrel some more(still not done in some of the covered areas) then cut and crowned the barrel right behind the FSB. Installed the Magwedge rail and a 1.5-4x30 30mm PEPR mount scope w/RGB horseshoe mil-dot sight and flip up lens caps. May ditch the PEPR for low or medium 30mm rings to tighten up the sight picture to cheek rest alignment on it though.

They have a 20rd model that has lips for the floor plate at ten and five round locations, you can just saw it off at that level. I think though, it was not intended for the consumer to do so. I can only get nine in mine....probably a spring issue. They probably did it for ease of molding for various sizes I am guessing. Mine had a broken feed lip, so I wanted to try reducing the round count and spring down, to milk some use out of it. :)

It is cheaper to have one mold, fill it to what capacity mark they want/need then shave the extra off for final assembly. Then it is just a matter of programming the machine how much liquid to pour in per batch. So yeah, your guess is a pretty good one. Fairly common injection molding practice with computerized machines.
But, it does make for easy cut down and re-purpose if you have a 20 and need a 10 or 5 for hunting, etc. A lot simpler than whoever it was that did the Tapco mag cut down on the other boards all those years ago.
Looks good and pretty square.
I wasn't liking the bulkiness, weight, and height of the more tactical scope I had on there so I found something else a little more "hunting" friendly and lighter. It's a Simmons 8-point 3-9x32 scope. It sits down lower so I don't feel like I need a riser on the butt stock. So, this is pretty much my finished product.

It's a ten rounder, legal in Missouri for hunting. I do have a Canadian 5 round box mag I was thinking of using, but then I'd have to go a different route with the rail to accommodate stripper clips. May get a Promag 5 rnder though so it is more streamlined. Only reason for a 10rnd mag for deer is if you come across a whole bunch at one time, LOL.
On the scope, I think the eye-line is over an inch lower than the original 3-9x40 scope I had on it due to the rings and at least 3/4" lower than the tactical scope.
I have the same mag in mine, I do like the way that looks.. a lot.. I may have to look into one of those stocks. It looks better, to me, than the Combat Exchange or ATI (not sure which it is) I have. It has a cheek riser on it, which does me no good since I shoot left handed.
agreed on the scope change. some times less is more. Good looking gun!

Combat Exchange was bought by ATI so they are the same and the only synthetic stock to have the comb setup on the butt. I am lefthanded as well so always steered clear of those stocks. This one is a Choate cause I couldn't find a Ramline which I like more.

Haven't had a chance to get to the range yet. Need to go as I several firearms I need to test out.
I find the Choate Conventional very comfortable for a deer gun. They do take some fitting and does make the gun a tad front heavy but I still like it that way.
I dig it!
I haven't tried a Choate conventional stock...but love the drags. Very nice look and fit. Much better aesthetically than anything ATI or Combat Exchange made. I still want a Butler Creek, but they are pretty uncommon to find.
Ram-Line's are also very nice....but you don't see them frequently since bought out by/rebranded as Champion. Their folders were a joke, but the conventional stocks are light as a feather. Plus they are thin enough to allow for a spike bayonet with some fairly easy dremel love. I wish I hadn't fit mine to my DB...it won't fit anything else now....and she since found a purty wood stock.

That is why I always preferred the Ramline. And yes, JH, the way they are made is quite nice if you want to keep the bayonet intact. The advantage of the Choate for hunting is the built-in recoil pad whereas the Ramline has a plastic plate. Although on a previous build I did find a grind to fit pad to install on the Ramline stock.

The pad actually increases the LOP enough to make up for how far back the scope is. and IIRC the eye relief on that particular scope was around 2.8"- 3". On Joe's old stock I'd need a pic to refresh my memory to be sure, but if it is the same as standard stocks with the cutout for the buttplate, yes I have an idea. Years back Martin08 built up an East German parade rifle with the chromed butt plate only he made his plate out of polish aluminum. If you can make/have made an aluminum plate that slips over the recessed part of the buttstock to make it flush, so as not to destroy the OEM part of the stock, then you can find a grind to fit recoil pad(like a limbsaver) that matches up the hole pattern, fit it to the plate and there you go. Main thing is that the bottom hole lines up due to how little wood there is on that part of the stock. It is easier to drill a new hole in the top, fatter part of the stock, as it will not affect the OEM look if you go back to that.
As for the Ramline HG, you mean like this one?

IIRC, there are no holes at all, I have since adhered a thin rubber pad I made from the liner to a truck stop briefcase. :))
The way Joe described it to me, he bought the gun specifically to get the stock, set it in a corner for a week or two...and the glued on super spongy rubber pad wet rotted and kind of slid off. It sounded like the death of many 8-track tapes to me.
It has never truly been fitted to a gun, and it's a bit of a bear to actually find a gun that fits into it....yet there is still a huge amount of gap at the stock ferrule. The AKesque handguard is fun to get to play nice with a gas tube as well. I don't think that is pictured in the above thread though. Per Joe's instructions though...it must be used on a gun with a bayonet, since it is capable of either spike or blade. It currently has an M44 bayonet, with a straight eared Russian handle, to keep it upright...but it will accept a blade just as easily, even on a spiker.
I think it's a prototype,or possibly the only one left on earth. Piers Dev is a stock company from Australia...but, since the govt. there defrocked the citizenry of their arms...they never really had any internet presence. It is a total mystery....and best of all, It's pretty neato.
As far as I can tell, it is a plastic rendition of a Sporter stock, just with a traditional magwell and a bayonet slot.

I remember that stock now, about the sexiest synthetic stock ever. Probably made of fiberglass reinforced nylon from the looks. And now I also remember your old SKSboards username, LOL
Yeah, I would just find a "grind to it" LimbSaver type recoil pad to put on there. Grind it to size then drill pilot holes for the screws. If you have a local gunsmith in your area he may have a collection of used buttpads you can rummage through to find one that fits with little or no work. That's where I got the one I had in the other SKS pic
Okay, I finally got my project gun finished the way it is going to stay. At least for a while, LOL. I ended up putting the fixed box mag on it that is blocked to 5rnds. If it's for deer hunting you don't need that many anyway, right? I have a black Chinese SKS style sling on the way for a finishing touch and the bipod is removable as it is more for bench shooting at the range.

Might have to start saying bubba for a true bubba, and start saying "smithed" for something like this. You've done an amazing amount of work to that rifle.
Well done, Sir!

Thanks Larry, going to put a 10 rnd ammo sleeve on the butt stock to finish it off along with the black SKS sling. That with 5 in the mag will be plenty for a days outing in these parts.
I had to say something nice to prove that I've really forgiven you...... rofl rofl rofl

So, since I got new clothes for my project SKS here I thought I'd model her for you.

I really dig that green KSI stock on that carbine GG. Truth be told, I was 100% going to bid on that stock this past Sunday before the auction ended and see if I could snag it sub-$75. I had to catch a flight and forgot all about it. I’m glad you got it though! Looking great! thumb1
YES!
I almost grabbed one sans handguard a few weeks ago...just to have one. Now I am regretting forgetting that auction myself.
That looks just splendid! thumb1
Thanks fellas, It is about 6ozs heavier than the Choate, but it is also has about a 1/2" longer pull and is better balanced in the weight distribution, I like that. Not sure I like the Simmons scope though. I do have 3 others I can try out on it to see which I like on there best.
But most of all, I like how she's dressed.
Looks GREAT. I like my K-Sport clone the best, today. PAX
Did you mention how this SKS is internally ? Everything else is cosmetics and only important to women. :)

She is a woman, that's why I said I'd model "her" for you.

My OD K-Sport didn't have an HG, so I used a black Ramline HG, and an OD VZ 59 sling with the leather strap died black. The contrasting HG, recoil pad and hasp really sets it off. Plus the donor rifle was a Kengs Paratrooper with the cleanly neutered FSB. The whole build turned out nice. There's a picture of it here. PAX

Sorta figured we'd wind up on that path sooner or later.
Gotta say, that's the first moderated post I've seen. Too bad.

Hey PAX, have you ever thought about getting some OD Green Fusion paint made for plastics and painting your HG to match? Would bring it a little closer.

I have but it's tough to match exactly and since it's a quasi-clone to begin with, I like the contrasting bits. PAX

Well, there's always the cheesegrater you could put on there if you wanted a change from the Ramline.

I like the cheese graters on milsurp wood furniture mostly. Here's a home grown Para with that set up.

The Ramline has a unique profile that's very different from other synth HGs. I have 2 boxes of HGs, wood & synth. The only other different synth is the Choate 4 slot and no slot. I've got a slotted one on a black T6 with a long Yugo bayo. PAX
Well crap.
Now I'm thinking I need a black, ventilated handguard for the as yet un-named project SKS.

If Larry doesn't need the Choate, and it's a 4 slot, I'd take it. PAX

Yes, but you can entangle Justin though...I need a Choate to go with the stock I got from astronut recently, which added to my ATI HG collection. I am also sorting through stuff to put in the box. I can include a cheesegrater, do you prefer with or without shell deflector Larry? rofl2
This made me recall how badly I wanted a plain jane ATI black handguard for my first SKS that came in an Ultralite...while we are discussing contrasting bits, I kinda miss my wood handguard on black Combat Exchange look. Once I finally got the ATI/CE HG...my now deceased neighbor and I both destroyed a handguard ferrule and my wood handguard trying to drive the pin out. cry1
I never did actually install the dang ATI....and ran that gun without a handguard for nearly two years....just the tube, a floppy STILL attached ferrule, and a cut and retied hair tie to hold down the rear sight that came sans retaining spring. rofl
I only burned myself once.
A week later I had a cheesegrater that I could cram into the YES still attached ferrule. This was back in the days when cleaning happened often enough to always launch the op rod through the sheetrock across the room due to ignorance and forgetfulness being at war inside my head. :-[
When I was courting a K-Sports a couple weeks ago without the handguard, I thought it would look great with a cheesegrater.
Another thing that is cool, is cheesegraters in the white. I stripped the bluing on one....pert dern rad. :)

You should have watched LCs nifty little vid on removing the rear ferrule before you attempted fate. You'd have been an HG and a good ferrule richer and not have burned yourself. rofl rofl

I have a couple with the shell deflectors, one with the mount for a shell deflector sans deflector...I figured that one could go a long with one with it and you could just swap or skip the deflector on two guns. I also have several regular ones...some blued, some powder coated (i think). I am planning on shipping today, let me know what tickles your fancy. :)
I'm a blue steel kind of guy.
Other than that, I'm open.
