Title: A bit different than you last saw it!
Post by: Weldrdave on February 11, 2020, 04:46:21 PM
Hello folks, Dave here.  Well, last time I was at the Oaks gun show I picked up a used, kinda beat up stock to play around with.  Got it for $35.00 which I the guy wouldn't budge off of $40.00 till I came back at the end of the day. I'd been wanting to do/paint a "camo" stock, but do it in "snow camo".  I have land up in New Hampshire and it was fitting "I" thought.
Well, here's my first go at it.  Some of you may "cringe and hate it, some may like it". Either way, "No SKS " was harmed in this undertaking, just an old beat stock.....
I spend many hours stripping, sanding, cleaning and 3 days of painting coats.  Enjoy, hope you like it.  thumb1 It's my Californized /636\.  Dave

Okay, I like the art work and paint done on it but on the other side of the equation I dont think I could ever violate an original SKS stock.  Just saying!   ;)

I think it looks pretty cool, and it's a unique looking pattern. Simo Hayha would approve....probably.

How did you get it to come out like that?

I like it.

Looks good. Nice artwork. Just don't lean it against a tree and walk away for a bit wink1.

Excellent work with the prep, paint, and artwork!

IDK, if the stock didn't have a gun in it, and hopefully wasn't stamped with serial, I don't see a problem with improving it. I wouldn't want to see a full matching rifle be subjected to this. But, it's not mine. And it certainly looks good!

The stock "was" numbered 07716.  It had a "lot" of dings and wear.  It had no butt plate just the side sling attachment.  All I basically did was start with Zip-strip because it was pealing in places, sanded all the bad spots and splintered areas on the underside by hand, then sanded with, 100 grit, 150 grit then wiped it down real good with denatured alcohol.

Next, I gave it a Flat grey primer base, 2 coats, then "blotched" areas of flat black to your liking and let it dry 24hrs.  Next I took some snippings from an evergreen bush, layed the stock down on one side, layed the snips of the bush in no rhyme or reason and sprayed a coat of Flat white lightly over the bush clippings.  I let it dry 24hrs, layed it on the other side and repeated.  Yesterday I gave it 3 coats of clear enamel sprayed on lightly about every 30 mins.  All the paint was the "ACE" hardware brand enamel, nothing fancy.    Trust me when I say it wasn't in Great shape.  It was intact and it didn't look like it was an "old stock" just abused.  The way I see it, I gave it some new character.  ;).   I still have the original stock the rifle came with but even that one wasn't in much better shape either.  A fella at the gun show had a "pile" of stocks and maybe 15 SKS stocks.

Very nice work.  thumb1

Do you have any ‘before’ photos of that stock?

Pushed past 60 a while ago. Got me a Masters degree at your age. It took me five years. Worst money I ever spent, hasn't done anything for me but put me in the hole for $135,000. I'm still just as dumb as I was ten years ago, but better educated I guess. I really just wanted to see how it felt to be an educated idiot since that's what they were called in my line of work. No different. Only difference is now I can't afford to pay attention.

I got my MS in the military.  Now, I don't want to do $#!T.  I've earned my "keep and retirement"  thumb1. I always give and pass knowledge when I can though. I taught many years and passed to many "cadets" what it's like to be on the "enlisted" side of the house and to be respectful of senior people even though they don't have the education you may have.
